M10 Monochrom - would you always use a yellow filter for better tonality or not?

Each time when a topic about the use of photographic filters comes up, I think: where is Lars Bergquist?

Lars made hundreds of postings about use of filters here - though unfortunately he is not with us any more.

I remember he published  an excellent summary of his experience - well written as always,

Brilliant summary.  Thanks for mentioning it.  One more thing about the yellow filter besides increasing contrast outdoors when the lighting is such that shadows are cast and filtering down one of the hues of two adjacent colors in order not to print the same gray tone is that it reduces mid-tones.

Ah, Lars, my favorite forum contributor (along with Nicole, also sadly gone).  Lars’ small arms knowledge also crossed over to photography, with this strap technique that I’ve found useful...

And, as regards this thread topic, his sage advice was “The first rule of using colored filters is: don’t unless there is a clearly statable reason to do so.”  Miss that guy.
