jonoslack Posted August 7, 2007 Share #1 Posted August 7, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi There I just received my chrome 50 'lux from Robert White today, I've done all the relevant focus tests (and focus shift tests) - as expected there is a small amount of focus-shift, but it's on the spot at f1.4, and a large batch of boring test photos indicate it's pretty good). That completes my lineup (for now at least): 2 bodies (1 chrome, 1 black, both worn!) 16-18-21 tri-elmar 21mm pre asph Elmarit 28-35-50 tri-elmar 35 'cron asph (chrome) 50 'cron (chrome) 50 'lux asph (chrome) 75 'cron asph 90 f2.8 This gives me options for Travel and Landscape (usually 2 tri-elmars and the 75 'cron for close up). with varying lenses for different circumstances. If I'd known about all this last October when I picked up a cheap epson r-d1 . . . . . In the perfect world I'd like a 24 and a 135 to go with them, but they will just have to wait! fursan Posted August 7, 2007 Share #2 Posted August 7, 2007 Congratulations Jono! If only I had known before I bought into the dslr era!! Enjoy. marknorton Posted August 7, 2007 Share #3 Posted August 7, 2007 Pleased you've got a good one, mine had to go back because the focussing was impossibly stiff, especially at the ends of the range. Have the say the R-D1 seems incredibly dated now and on the odd occasion I do use it, I'm forever forgetting to wind on. Was it the chrome or the black body the dog took for a walk? Jamie Roberts Posted August 7, 2007 Share #4 Posted August 7, 2007 Jono-- Glad to hear it! That's some sweet kit you've got there, and I think you'll love the 50 Lux! I hope you're planning on doing more wedding work; I loved your last stuff (and it looks like you're outfitted for a lot more than landscapes now too!) Guest guy_mancuso Posted August 7, 2007 Share #5 Posted August 7, 2007 Nice lineup Jono. I'm starting to feel the itch again. Wish my Nocti would come
Paul Hart Posted August 7, 2007 Share #6 Posted August 7, 2007 That's a very good line-up, but every M8 should be married up to a 24 ASPH at regular intervals - it's an extraordinary lens and of course can be used without a separate viewfinder. Eoin Posted August 7, 2007 Share #7 Posted August 7, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm delighted for you Jono, but some how I can just feel that elusive 24mm Elmarit in gorgeous satin chrome whispering softly in your ear "buy me, buy me". You're never ever ever finished buying lenses and I'm glad to see you recognise that fact. Enjoy! :D
tom0511 Posted August 7, 2007 Share #8 Posted August 7, 2007 In the perfect world I'd like a 24 and a 135 to go with them, but they will just have to wait! Jono, have to tell you that I barely use 24 and 135, much more often 28, 50 and 90, sometimes 21. Sounds like a greatsetup you won now. Cheers, Tom
c6gowin Posted August 7, 2007 Share #9 Posted August 7, 2007 Jono, congratulations on getting the 50 Lux. I too just bought a new 50 Lux. I resisted a long time, but finally succumbed. Mine just arrived yesterday. I haven't had time for a focus test on the tripod, but my quick impression is that its focus is slightly behind the intended focus point at minimum distance wide open (f1.4). Of course that could be my error due to body sway. Regardless, it is much better than the one I borrowed from from the Leica Akademie on the Germany trip. I am headed to London this afternoon and plan to give it a good work out on the trip. Guy, don't hold your breath for the Noctilux. My order was received at Solms on April 4 and I am still waiting. It will be worth the wait though. Mark Gowin
Guest guy_mancuso Posted August 7, 2007 Share #10 Posted August 7, 2007 Scary thing is Mark is i never even got confirmation they received my order. Might have to send a note to check on it.
c6gowin Posted August 7, 2007 Share #11 Posted August 7, 2007 Guy, you should have recieved your original reciepts and order confirmation back from Germany by now. You may want to check with your contacts to verify your order.
Guest guy_mancuso Posted August 7, 2007 Share #12 Posted August 7, 2007 I will do that when I get home from vacation. My only other lens that keeps haunting me in my dreams is the 24mm again. I honestly don't need another lens but I'm a pig too. My lineup is really something to try to avoid if there is any kind of budget in place. Right now i have the 12mm CV, WATE, 28 and 35 cron , 50 and 75 lux, 90 cron and 90 macro , 135 apo, and the Nocti on order plus a 24mm Oly shift lens. Now if leica made a 24mm F2 than i would be all over that in seconds
jonoslack Posted August 7, 2007 Author Share #13 Posted August 7, 2007 Pleased you've got a good one, mine had to go back because the focussing was impossibly stiff, especially at the ends of the range. Have the say the R-D1 seems incredibly dated now and on the odd occasion I do use it, I'm forever forgetting to wind on. Was it the chrome or the black body the dog took for a walk? HI Mark It's a chrome one - I don't suppose it's true, but I've heard less people complain about these - it had just come into Leica UK when I was talking to them, so I rang Robert White, told them and ordered it! I'm rather partial to silver lenses on a black body. It was the chrome that the dog took for a walk - considering it's been molly coddled in it's bag for 8 months, and had both shiny bits and scuff marks already, I think it's rather remarkable that I can't find any new marks (the leather wide leica strap - now discarded - was the culprit!). I sold my R-D1 in January just before I bought the second body - one of the few camera purchases I've actually made a profit on!
marknorton Posted August 7, 2007 Share #14 Posted August 7, 2007 Yes, I must learn to get rid of stuff, D100, Digilux 2, R-D1, all gathering dust. LIke you, I've discarded the wide strap, the combination of the split rings and the strap adjustment screws were bad news. I am surprised the LCD display didn't get damaged, it does seem more durable than at first sight.
jonoslack Posted August 7, 2007 Author Share #15 Posted August 7, 2007 Hi Jamie Jono-- Glad to hear it! That's some sweet kit you've got there, and I think you'll love the 50 Lux! I hope you're planning on doing more wedding work; I loved your last stuff (and it looks like you're outfitted for a lot more than landscapes now too!) I think I'm in love already! It's so HEAVY - it still surprises me every time I pick up a chrome len. As for the wedding work - thank you - THANK YOU! It isn't something I normally do, so it's really nice to get some kind words from a master. In retrospect I did rather enjoy it, but I'd have to be sooo expensive to make it worthwhile! More than landscape as you say - the M8 has really shifted my focus, I don't think my style has necessarily changed, but it's much nicer shooting people when you aren't sticking a Nikon 70-200 into their faces! thanks again
jonoslack Posted August 7, 2007 Author Share #16 Posted August 7, 2007 Nice lineup Jono. I'm starting to feel the itch again. Wish my Nocti would come Hi Guy I really can live without a Nocti - but I keep getting that 24 itch (I know you get it too). It's a terrible disease, lens lust! Anyway, Ihope you get yours soon. jonoslack Posted August 7, 2007 Author Share #17 Posted August 7, 2007 Hi There Fursan Congratulations Jono! If only I had known before I bought into the dslr era!! Enjoy. Yes indeed, but then, think of all that film we aren't buying! HI Paul That's a very good line-up, but every M8 should be married up to a 24 ASPH at regular intervals - it's an extraordinary lens and of course can be used without a separate viewfinder. You mustn't tempt me! Actually, I'm quite good at shooting both the WATE (at 21) and the 21mm without a finder - it isn't perfect, but okay. I'm saved a little by the fact of liking chrome lenses, and there aren't many of those chrome 24's around! Ho Tom Jono, have to tell you that I barely use 24 and 135, much more often 28, 50 and 90, sometimes 21. Sounds like a greatsetup you won now. Cheers, Tom Well, there's a plea for sanity anyway! Currently the two WATE's and the 75 'cron get the most use.

Mark Gowin HI Mark I'm going to stick mine on a tripod and give it a real thorough test at some point, but I have take a good number of sharp photos with it, and that should be enough (shouldn't it?) jonoslack Posted August 7, 2007 Author Share #20 Posted August 7, 2007 Yes, I must learn to get rid of stuff, D100, Digilux 2, R-D1, all gathering dust. LIke you, I've discarded the wide strap, the combination of the split rings and the strap adjustment screws were bad news. I am surprised the LCD display didn't get damaged, it does seem more durable than at first sight. I'm usually quite good about it (although I do have a couple of Leica lenses to get rid of). The R-D1 as a triumph, I bought it 'new' from Calumet as 'old stock' for around £700, and sold it 4 months later for around £1000 - most gratifying! I seem to remember selling my D100 for £800 (my, that was a long time ago!). The only ones which gather dust are my wife's cameras - she doesn't use the old ones, but won't let me sell them.
