lct Posted January 14, 2020 Share #21 Posted January 14, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) I like much my Summicrons too but they have not the same character indeed. Couple of snaps with the Elmar-M on the M240 here. FWIW.

Objectively, the Summicron has less vignetting and more resolution below f/5.6 but it has also more CA, more flare and more focus shift. For better performances in a tiny package i would recommend the Summarit 50/2.5 (no experience with the current 50/2.4) but it has less character than the Elmar. Now the latter is my favorite 50 in good light so i'm not 100% unbiased i suspect . The OP is the same dude in DPreview, you're consistent enough tho... lol

Good To Be Retired Posted January 15, 2020 Author Share #25 Posted January 15, 2020 On a related note, and I apologize if this a very old topic as I have been away from Leica for an extended period of time, when I last looked into this there was a rather polarizing discussion regarding whether the ELMAR M 50mm f/2.8 E39 (the 1994 - 2007 6 bit coded version) could be safely collapsed into the M240. It needs to be extended during mounting of course, but was there ever any real resolution regarding the discussion of whether collapsing is safe or chancy? Thanx. On M cameras, the Elmar-M 50/2.8 can collapse harmlessly but better keep it extended when mounting and removing the lens from the body.
