Summaron 28mm f/5.6 on Monochrom 1st version - would you recommend this combination?

I'm thinking about adding a 28mm Summaron f/5.6 but wonder how well it will work with a Monochrom version 1 (CCD) because of the limited ISO performance compared with the M10.

Is there anybody who has used this combination? Would you recommend the lens? The old school IQ and compactness are the factors that make me consider this lens.

How would the Summaron compare to the 28mm Summicron and the 35mm pre asph Summilux?

Hello AA,

I use and know well the Summicron-M 28mm and Summilux 35mm non asph (I use the asph also for different rendering, you can call me "lens nut")

on Monochrom and color M.

My opinion is another palette was added when the Summaron-M 28mm came, but not replacing the other.

Monochrom sensor or not, really the Summaron-M 28mm can give no other lens can approch (not in "simple way", I refuse to argue).

In my use, each one of the lenses you cited is very different from the Summaron-M 28mm.

This is not easy to see/understand, but only in use for some time the Summaron-M, the subtle rendering can't be matched by other lenses.

The obvious I see that when used at full open at f/5.6 no sun stars in the light spots that other "superior" lenses give.

I understand that people who see the old design as "just that old design", and other lenses are better/superior in general rendering.

Hi a.noctlux,

Thank you for your reaction. Do I understand correctly that the 5.6 aperture in combination with the ISO performance of the 1st Monochrom works fine for you?

Do you manage to make the combination work in lower light situations? What limitations do you experience?

For really lower light I use my Summicron-M ( if need be Summilux/Noctilux in other focal lengths).

F/2 to F/5.6 means 4 stops gain, that can be from ISO 6400 to 800, if I need not too "grainy pictures with less dof".

The great result without sun stars ( on spot light ) and good dof at f/5.6 is something no other 28mm can do.

I don't like sun stars in my pictures, that's all.

For sure, Summaron-M 28mm is most of time daylight lens.

I would agree that the summaron 28 f/5.6 works fine at the lower ISO's.  I actually don't shoot that lens in low light, I use it outside in the day time (cloudy or sunny).   If you go to the sunny f/16 rule, outside in the middle of the day using ISO 500, you would shoot f/16 and 1/500.  So, f/5.6 is three stops open, so it would be 1/4000 of a second.   So, in the shade it would be about 3 stops different anyway, so you could shoot about 1/500 second.

I've used this lens with the M10D outside and kept the ISO pretty low.

I also agree the rendering is different.  I like the look at 5.6 and 8.

Best of luck!
