Total DoF yes but its repartition in front of and behind the subject matter can be different. Here at the same aperture (f/2) the 75/1.4 has more DoF than the 75/2 behind the subject. Don't ask me how it works though.

I've heard that modern lenses have the effect of a shallower DOF because of a higher resolution and more detailed rendering. But in real life however, my experience is the opposite. I feel that the pictures from my 50mm Summilux pre-ASPH give a more blurred background than my modern 50mm Summilux ASPH at the same apertures. This is probably because the less smooth (more uneven) bokeh of the pre-ASPH gives an impression of a more blurred bokeh (even though it probably isn't).

When i hear "bokeh" i reach for my gun :D. Just kidding but it might happen the same as for 75/1.4 and 75/2 lenses above. Never did that test on my asph and pre-asph 50/1.4 though.

Sorry to disagree on this but my Summilux 50/1.4 asph is sharper at f/2 than both my Summicron 50/2 v4 & v5, especially at edges and corners. Also, aside from DoF, f/1.4 vs f/2 makes the same difference as 3200 vs 6400 iso i.e. negligible or essential depending on cameras and subject matters. As for field curvature it can be a problem on both lenses, although i agree it is more difficult to deal with at f/1.4, but the Summicron has more focus shift and those are only rangefinder problems anyway. I know accessory EVFs can be painful tu use with M cameras but nailing focus with both lenses is not an issue with them, when focusing at working aperture at least.

No need to feel sorry. Horses for courses, as the Brits say. Para los gustos se hicieron los colores.

Lens update.

Ok, I went waaaay overboard, and ended up with both a 50mm Summilux and a 50mm APO (impulse buy). 😮

I do miss the colors and overall look from the 28mm Summilux I tried, so I may try one again. I think I'd just have to put up with the weight and hope I don't get tired of that. From everything I've read, the 28mm Summicron sounds like maybe not as magical of a rendering.

I briefly tested a 35mm Summicron, which I liked a lot, and then the 28mm Elmarit, which I found blurry in the corners and maybe a bit harsh?

I have the feeling I'll let the APO go at some point here, as I'm probably not the person that can really squeeze the best out of it, and that would free up more cash to experiment with other lenses. 🙂

Cheers
