Any experience with Lumix 24-105 f4 and 16-35 f4 lenses on an SL?

Recommended Posts

The Lumix 16-35 is the only L-mount zoom that interests me at the moment due to it being very lightweight --- it's half the weight (500g) of the Leica 16-35.

I believe the release date is mid to late December though, and the only review I could find is the one by Adorama on Youtube.

Thank you.  Yes, it’s the weight is what interests me as well.  Somehow I had the impression the lenses were already available.  Obviously I was mistaken.

Hi, I have the Lumix 24-15=05 f4 zoom and have used it with my SL and S1R bodies. To me it's the perfect walk around lens, light weight and great FL range. I read up extensively on it before purchasing as there articles out there under it's name with "review" on the end. I think the lens is very sharp and underrated because it's a "kit" lens, and often they can be one of the sharpest in the line (ie: Fuji's 18-55 zoom). Anyway, I love mine and am happy with it as I don't need f2.8 much so the f4 is just fine. BTW I also have the Lumix Pro 70-200 f4 and the Pro 50mm f1.4.

These lenses are extremely sharp and the AF is lighting fast on them. A great alternative to the high cost Leica counterpart (if available) and really, the lenses Leica should have made.

Cheers,

Robert

+1.  Expected availability according to B&H is Jan 13, 2020.

FYI, my pre-order shipped today (16-35). Dunno if the first batch was delayed slightly or I'm in a second wave, but I should have it tomorrow.  If there's still any interest, I'd be happy to report back my first impressions in a day or two.

Yes please, I'd love to read your first impressions. I'm considering this lens.

I see you've both shot at f4.  I just got my 16-35mm, unboxed, it attached tried to take some shots and found that I can't change aperture. On the SL2. When I move the rear scroll wheel to stop down an icon that looks like a lock shows up. ie. I can only shoot at f4. Anyone else seeing this problem?!?!

Crisis averted. Once I realized that the top dial was locked as well, I realized I must have accidental pressed the dial lock on the rear menu. Theres an icon I'm going to remove.

I've taken a few test shots. My initial impression is that its a good optic and delivers about what one should reasonably for an FF zoom at this price point. My initial impression is that color fidelity is excellent, but the corners at f4 might perhaps be a little softer than I would have hoped. Center performance seems very good. I have a vague sense that performance might be a tick stronger at the long end than the short, but it's only a guess. Obviously, the build quality is not in the same country code as my Summicron SL-75. What's a bit more disappointing is that it doesn't seem to reach the standard of my ART 135mm either.  OTOH, for L-glass, it's quite light and reasonably compact. And to be clear the build quality is fine, its just not to the level where one feels that sense of satisfaction when one picks up a Leica optic.

I viewed this lens as a stop gap measure for the arrival of a 35mm Summicron, followed by the 24 or 21mm with the ability to cover the ultra wide end once those arrive.  The true test for me is whether or not it can equal or outperform the alternative I actually have in the form of my 21, 28 and 35mm M primes on the SL2.
