But this is exactly why he was hesitant to respond, because people make it more than it is. Enjoy the interview, but don't twist his words.

No, he not only says it’s the best (from 16:45 on), but explains the reason, i.e., there was more room to work inside the common barrel size, since a 35 requires the least space.  He then repeats... best performance.

BTW, this reinforces my earlier point that lens designers can excel when size constraints are lifted.  That’s partly what makes compact, fast M lenses such achievements.
