... Everybody I photograph is generous & kind

That's good to hear.

I must admit that nowadays I am a bit skittish about doing street photography that involve people.

I have never been big on pre-asking for a shot; my interest in street photography has always leaned toward capturing the unguarded moment that Cartier-Bresson was always in pursuit of.

I think a lot of that comes down to two things: intent, and camera handling. There are plenty of ways to take street shots and look like you aren’t even taking a picture, especially with an M or Q. Look at how Winogrand handled his camera when he was out in the street - he looks like he’s trying to fix something that’s broken almost all the time.

In regards to intent, if you feel like you’re doing something wrong, you’re going to feel skittish. Do you think you’re doing something wrong by taking these photographs?

There’s a modern school of street photography that is really obnoxious here in New York City, where some photographers think that they are millennial Bruce Gildens. And you can go on YouTube and see videos of these kids getting hit in the face, having arguments, etc.

I think a lot of it boils down to what your internal vibe is, and whether you’re looking to take something from people. Because if that’s the intent, I think people feel it.

Anyway, probably a discussion for a different thread!

No, I don't think there is anything morally or ethically wrong about photographing people out on the street.  My skittishness comes from the uncertainty of not knowing how they may think about this issue.

I agree with you 100% - Bruce Gilden's approach is not my cup of tea and I have never tried to use his "in your face" approach.  IMHO it is an exercise in futility for other photographers to try to "be" Bruce Gilden - or any other photographer.

My advice (if asked) would be just try to be yourself.  Don't strive to make your images look like another photographer's images.

Copycatting is a road to nowhere.  JMHO.

...the train has left the station...so this will be my 805th and last post in this thread. With the SL3 rapidly approaching I had to make a call to either stay with the L-Mount system and upgrade to SL3 soon or switch completely to another brand, and the latter has won. While I really like the SL2 (as the SL before) there have been quite some points with Leica that have made me feel more and more uncomfortable, mainly waiting time for new products and repairs and especially the increased re-labelling of Sigma and Panasonic lenses, which in my eyes puts Leica more and more into a (luxury) label rather than a camera brand. In addition, my experience with the Pana S5 and Sigma lenses have shown that I do not need Leica to produce decent results and enjoy photography. Finally, the rumored specs of the SL3 do not trigger this "must have feeling".

Since this is a sample thread I would kindly ask you not to kick-off a debate about this decision or future of L-mount in general. I would like to take the opportunity to thank you all for having a look at my photos and I wish you all the best. Should you want to follow my photography going forward, pls follow my Facebook page www.facebook.com/forstfotografie.de.

Cheers, Holger

For my "farewell" shooting with the SL gear I went to a museum station in the Netherlands:
