OK. So _now_ what do we do with our film and our kit?

Good point. The duty-free shops must be virtually closed. Success there is variable, but on this last visit I picked up a belt from Mulberry and a short-sleeved shirt from Pink, both ideal for work and neither of the items were in their London shops the day before.

At least here in Oslo I can get my tax free booze on arrival. Which is the only sencible thing to do anyway as carrying bottles are a pain and a fire hazard. I know IATA have been lobbying to get as many airports set up for this as possible for a long time.

Film Safe.

I just checked for hold baggage x-ray machines and they say ISO 1600 is guaranteed safe for 10 scans. So ISO 100 is safe for 160 scans.

Rapiscan Systems - Hold Baggage Screening - Rapiscan XRD1000

download the datasheet to see.

I think we should ask Fuji and BAA to post this info on the film safety of the hold baggage scanners, sniffers. It film is safe in the hold (at least it is cold also) then we can take film abroad with safety knowing it won't be fogged. After all I assume that all packages on airmail flights are also x-rayed?

I hope the above is the case then the only other issue is putting our valuable (and not replacable at destination) equipment in the hold baggage.

I have combination locks on my Samsonite cases and they are never opened as I remember the number setting before hand which is not changed. There is nothing that I know of that suggests staff are allowed to open your cases while you are not present.

The Israelis have a good system for screening passanges before you leave Tel Aviv, it basically involves a 45 minute interrogation of your movements while in Israel, who you met where you stayed. They open your case and hand baggage and also x-ray it in front of you. Then they take your passport and tickets and walk away for 10 minutes checking with colleagues and perhaps a Mossad database. This is to make you sweat. Some passangers really get irrate with this procedure but ultimately it is for your safety. It is an accepted part of the travel from Israel for years now. Ultimately highly trained security staff who have good knowledge of human psychology are the best security rather than having us travel in bunny suits like criminals in the cells for the night.

We should still do some experiments with films in the hold though.

......And it sure did get me sweating when they refused to believe I had flown London to Tel Aviv for one meeting and was flying out the same day. This just did not compute with them. I must admit it wouldn't have been my first choice either but my boss at the time was a real slave-driver. The Israelis just could not get this and grilled me for nearly two hours. The only plus side was that the two interviewers were drop-dead gorgeous twenty-something girls :)

If other airline security wants to run the same recruitment policy I'm all for it. ;)

Film vulnerability: Ditto the suggestions of buying and developing in your country of destination. Don't know where to buy or develop? Then post your query on this forum - I'm certain someone will help with info.

Either that, or Mr. Unsworth will "assist" you with gratuitous phlegm or amateurishly-concealed cynicism - or unload upon you a mega-chip from his shoulder, the size of which might surprise you...

Challenging news; thankfully it may have foiled even worse news. But, what to do in the near future?

I am off to Spain in early September and had planned to take my Leica film cameras. Unless I can arrange to buy slide film in Malaga airport and get it processed in Spain before I leave that country, there are few practical alternatives. I could buy 'throwaway' cameras in Spain and get the film processed there. Or I could take my least valuable digital camera which could take pot luck in the hold and make the most of that! I have three weeks to decide a standby plan assuming constraints remain in place.

Any better suggestions?

Yet another "false flag " operation. I think people should wake up and see what is happening. Get informed, don't believe just what the BBC or any Rupert Murdock Media Corp is telling you.

Its time for Neo to decide which pill to take, the red one or the blue one...

And no I am not kidding, I am amazed how folks are being led around by the nose..by the Corp Media

And if you don't believe me..then watch....as our Civil liberties are slowly and inexhorably removed, deliberately, strategically and methodically..all you need to do is have a "terrorist event" or in this case a plot.

Perhaps you could link to a news organisation that tells the real truth? You seem very well informed as to the goings on over here today.

The fact that our civil liberties are being eroded is a well known fact. As is the fact that some people think it a good idea to blow up planes.

We may never know the real truth behind this one, but even the most paranoid Government do not close airports on a whim.

What would you rather have? A clear plastic bag to carry your wallet onto the plane, or 5,000 innocent people in the middle of the Atlantic in two day's time?

These people ARE out to get you (us), unfortunately.

(BTW, no amount of ID cards is ever going to stop this stuff from happening...)

I should have added that I am only away for one week in Spain, not long to turn round film in local labs.

David

You could consider posting the film either home or direct to your usual lab. As far as I know postal services do not routinely x-ray packages.

Like the rest of you I woke up to this news, no actually I was awakened to this news by a phone call this morning. It's bad enough that this stuff keeps happening but I constantly go through Heathrow. I am glad MI5 and the Met police have been vigilant and are doing their best to keep travellers safe.

Years ago, I accepted that in order to travel securely, there was no way to get a hand search at Heathrow. So when going through London, I only carried digital gear. Now, I am wondering whether I can even get my gear onboard as hand luggage. There is a cardinal rule: you don't check-in your camera gear for so many reasons. If not I may have to alter my itinirary in order to avoid London altogether, the same way I have been avoiding travelling through the USA - only because of the increased security (although justified) hassle. Sad world we live in.:(

Hmm Andy..where would I start?

How about a few "google videos" to start with.

Just like Neo, remember..not everything is what it seems..on the one hand it plays out perfectly well for those in the Blair Gov't and for the PNAC crowd in the USA..this is exactly what they want.

Lets start with this video which is a medlely of the original but gets to the point..very poignantly and boldly and I agree completely with the conclusions they arrive at....the truth is far more distubing and shocking, its better to go back thinking our Governments have our security and best interests at heart :)YouTube - 9/11 Vendetta 1.1

and this one if you have a few hours, but I believe is very well researched....THE TRUTH & LIES OF 9/11 - Google Video

and lastly if you wish to wander way off the mainstream media clap-trap.... now with this one I would say this.....the final point is THERE ARE MANY UNANSWERED QUESTIONS AND THE ANSWERS GIVEN ARE MOSTLY LIES..SOMETHING IS ROTTEN IN THE STATE OF DENMARK ..HORATIO

Loose Change - 2nd Edition - Google Video

Now if you believe what these young men are saying..then everthing else falls into place..in a weird and shocking way..and some people outrightly reject what they have to say..... it helps if you have an open mind.;)

Yes, but this is a real threat to our way of life (Our meaning "our" from both sides of the political fence). What is the fun of travelling abroad without shooting? So now must we post travel pictures made from disposable cameras saying "sorry, I normally use Leicas but you know ...".

It is a fact that anyone can make an ignition from alchohol or even toothpaste (well, my granddad did anyway) and that Al Qaeda is known to repeat failed attempts and that some people smuggle things inside their stomachs. So the threat of not being allowed cameras as carry ons may be for a long time.

Perhaps it is better to employ Israeli companies for airport security.

Unless you are taking your antique/collectable Leica with you I would expect that even though it would be disappointing to lose an item to damage or baggage theft that at least you are going to be able to replace it easily - as long as it is properly insured.

Unfortunately a substantial portion of my kit is custom-modified in one way or another so replacing it easily is unlikely.

Good old YouTube... how much more authoritative do you need ;)

Apparently, 6 million people weren't killed in the Holocaust and Apollo 11 never went to the moon, either...

What with fascist governments around the world trying to suppress me(1) and Islamic fundamentalist terrorists trying to blow me up(2), I think that I will get a machine gun and go and live in a hovel up in the woods somewhere, living off canned food. That'll teach them.

(1), (2) Of these, I am more inclined to believe one than the other.

Hmm strange and glib answer..thought so..just thought I'd give it a try. Doesn't hurt to try.

Guess you''ll have to find out when it actually happens.

Like a fly on the highway, it doesn't see the car thats going to kill them until it smashes into the windshield..too bad and too late.

I am not going to argue with you Andy.

You'll see what I mean as the months, and these are very crucial months..roll by.

Trying to distill some sense and conclusions into this thread which, while fascinating, has as these things are inclined to, strayed far from the original purpose ; I have come to the following conclusions, but as always I stand to be corrected if I have picked things up incorrectly:

1) Hand luggage X-rayed film should be safe but it is always better to ask for it to be hand-inspected. Requests for hand-examination are frequently ignored or simply result in additional inspection. Currently this is somewhat irrelevant!

2) Hold carried film should be safe for a reasonable number of holiday(vacation) air trips, unless it passes randomly through one of the "ultimate" Invisiontech scanners. Anyone know if these are world-wide or just a US phenomenon? The new Bangkok airport opens 26 September and I recall some internal scandal about US scanners but I can't remember the make involved.

3) Memory cards should be safe for both hand-luggage scans and ordinary hold-luggage scans. Does anyone know if an SD card carried in one's pocket has sufficient metal to set off the personal scan machine? If not, then why not stuff your pockets?

4) Insure, insure, insure your cameras! All-risks! No consolation if they do get stolen, but at least you can get some recompense. Airline baggage does go astray far too frequently, but can also be subject to some pretty rough handling so check at once on arrival before leaving the airport baggage area and report if damaged. Although there was no camera involved a change of terminal at KL resulted in an expensive bag falling off a speeding lorry and receiving severe impact damage - so beware!

The last one will not of course help if stolen on the way to one's destination but with the missing item papers you should be ok with your claim, and you can always buy a replacement at your destination and then later re-sell.

My other observation is that recently airlines working out of UK were told by BAA to tighten up on hand-luggage - particularly dimensions - to speed up passage through security! Ironic is it not?

Airlines/airports have long found hand baggage to be a nuisance (except the cheapie airlines like Ryanair who contrarily don't want hold baggage) and so I can see them thinking that this could be an ideal opportunity to sort out this once and for all. Maybe we will be allowed a small briefcase-sized bag when /if the restrictions are lifted but don't count on it. I would hope for a compensatory increase in hold baggage weight allowance, but then less weight overall means less fuel used and less costs. Am I being unduly pessimistic?
