What I’m thinking.

Try ‘striking their butts.’ See what happens. 😁

No. Like I said the staff at Leica Store does their very well and often go out of their ways to accommodate customer satisfaction. I do not take advantage of nice folks. I only like to spank those who are naughty.

Then they lack the authority to decide from whom to demand a deposit and from whom not. Plus, you’re probably in a culture where trading is very prevalent, like in Ancient Greece. You could order as many of those SL2s as can you and then turn around and sell them on eBay for a profit. Hence, they demand a deposit. There was no eBay in Ancient Greece, though, I believe.

Leica has regional managers who set the policy in their region.  We used to have the SE-Asia guy, but I believe we have been moved into another region. At least, that was the case 5 or so years ago.  He had a very ... singular approach to Leica’s customers.  That may account for what is happening in Singapore.

What advantage do you have if you are a sincere buyer?

Besides if there are tons of order on the queue since no deposit or full payment is required then it gets havoc which the order need not be honoured.

In my neck of the woods, both in France and SA, it's all about loyalty and the relationship with the dealer. I've always supported independent dealers that are owner-run and managed and have never had to put down a deposit or pre-payment.  When the item arrives I get a call to come in, collect and pay.

In any event with something like this,  I'm sure there are more than enough people in the queue who will take up the camera if the person ahead in the queue doesn't want it.

Fundamentally though, I do have an issue about being jerked around by manufacturers who sometimes throttle supply in order to create artificial demand. Maybe it's just me being a grumpy 62 year old....

What would you bring along other than a specific lens and SD card?

And what would you most want to compare against the SL, S1R on, DR, ISO, AF, stabilisation (against what SL lens?) and apart from recording everything on SD card what test to carry out

if you are provided one hour exclusive trial of the SL2 over the next couple of days?

AF first, high ISO thereafter. I assume that the tester will know whether there is IBIS or not, and if Leica has implemented IBIS in SL2, I will simply assume that it is (sufficiently) good. A few images with eg 75 or 90 SL-Summicron should confirm this. I would take a few shots with blown-out highlights. The digital rendering of highlights are typically harsh (compared to film), but some sensors are better than others.

One hour in or just outside of a crowded event is no way to get to know a camera.  So I would bring the 50 or 75 SL-SC a fast card and my most recent Android phone with FOTOS 3.0 loaded up. and do a little beta-testing.  Just long enough to make sure the IBIS is working.  A more serious test with the 90-280 to see if Leica has gotten IBIS + OIS to work would be nice, but can't be rushed.  Inside the event, I would back up and get crowd shots at ISO 3200 and 6400 to see if the lens's resolution holds up to the higher pixel count (that's an S1R weakness).  With Fotos (if it is ready), I would check the ease with which date time and geo  data can be imported, and the smoothness of wifi connection and re-connection under the control of the BT-LE.  The S1R has this pretty well down, but essential steps are buried around page 300 in the manual and in two separated menus  So the Q2 is the relevant comparison.  I won't be at the UK or French opening, but these take place in the evening to match US announcements in the morning, so streets, shops and earlu Christmas light deployments would be obvious choices.

Oh, yes.  Autofocus!!!

Thanks Scott.

The invite specifically states the date and time (60mins). If my understanding is correct, it is suppose to be 1:1 invitation while being communicated earlier. No sure about other sites.

Testing the AF tracking is primarily on my list. I will add in your advice of testing image at ISO3200, ISO6400.

My experience with 90-280mm on SL yield good lens stabilisation which never let me down, so I’m not certain still as in how can I effectively test IBIS at this point in time.

Like helged said, I attempt to take a few blown out shots to test the image quality as well.

AF performance is lowlight would also be good to test. In my view the AF of the SL is one of its weakest points especially when you compare it to the advanced AF that the Sony cameras use. The SL2 would really need to be in same ballpark otherwise I don't see the point of upgrading as the SL is good in all other areas (apart from weight)

I'm going to the Royal Opera House on 6 November anyway, so can I get an invite?

I bought the opera glasses for my father for a birthday present and doubt he's used them. If you can afford Leica you can afford to get tickets up front and you won't need the opera glasses.

Think I'll call Duke Street.

... update: Those very kind people at Leica are sending me an invite. Suppose I have to report back now.

The leaked pictures show four unlabelled buttons, two in front, two on top.  What can they do and how do you set them?  Do they have both short press and long press behavior?  Are there restrictions in what can go where?

A rhetorical question at this point, of course, because the people who know are under NDA until November 6.
