A camera that will have taken 18 months from announcement to launch, and postponed already twice looks like smart planning? looks more like a slow train crash to me. We not talking about innovation by competitors, we are talking about 2 products of the same company being developed in parallel over the past 3/4 years ...

Why are the forums so full of killjoys?

mmh, the S3 was announced, unlike the SL2, even presented at Photokina, unlike the SL2, and handed out for review, unlike the SL2

Well, the reviews came back and with no direct competitor, Leica decided on a major revision.  Makes sense to me.

sure, I am not sure whether they have no competitor, I guess we will see how many they sell.

I hope many, of course, though I won't be buying it myself, but it does not look like a very smooth launch to me. It was postponed already once

I dont know you, so I am not sure if you are serious, but I hope you are not

Killjoy: A killjoy is a person who spoils all the fun for everybody. You may be a killjoy if everyone's enjoying their meal at a restaurant and you complain constantly about the terrible service.

ライカの最新商品リストに「ライカSL2」「HG-SCL6」「RC-SCL6」「液晶保護フィルム SL2」が追加。Key Featuresは「47MP CMOS」「Maestro III Processor」「4K VIDEO」「In body stabilization」「Object Detection AF」「Dust and spraywater resistant」「Cine Mode」「Fotos App

Object detect AF could be like what Sony has..."AI-based object recognition" based on a database in the camera software.

No, by Object detect AF they mean ToFAF.

I see, thank you. So that includes you, given that you are constantly complaining about other customers in the restaurant instead of eating? :)

I have expressed doubts about one product, I am not sure why it bothers you so much but I guess it says more about you than it does about me.

I am dropping this as we are hijacking the trail with a discussion that I am sure is of zero interest to anyone else

No direct competitor?  Only if you look at the specs very narrowly, and even if that were true the current price tag far outweighs that argument I feel.

There are lots of medium format cameras, but none with the same mix of features as the S: weather-resistance, great fast modern lenses, huge autonomy, high speed, leaf shutter (on most lenses).

It sits in a niche between the ultra-expensive studio kings from PhaseOne and Hasselblad, and the cheaper mirrorless A7r-competitors from Fuji and (again) Hasselblad. I think that a lot of people here are disappointed that Leica didn't take a more amateur focus for the S (because they have no reason to buy it), but you can't fault Leica for identifying an under-served market.

Excuse me for commenting in re, "cheaper mirrorless"? Perhaps less costly would have been a better choice of words.  And how do you conceive of a Fuji GFX100, or even a 50s as being a Sony A7r competitor?  I own all three, the Sony being an A7rIII, and I can attest to the fact that your comparison is bizarre.   And if you are singling out the fact that they are all mirrorless, as Bill Clinton once said, "that dog won't hunt".

My local camera store tells me that they sell to customers who previously bought the high-megapixel Sony cameras. So maybe not a competitor but rather an upgrade.

Upgrade to MF, not an upgrade within FF.

It's about moving to a different aspect ratio, larger sensor, greater detail acquisition and so on.  My original transition from MF to FF had been coincident with the onset of the digital camera era, and now, with the advent of LESS COSTLY digital medium format cameras I have transitioned back.  Wishful thinking has provoked those so inclined to assume that high MP FF cameras can assimilate the output of MF but, IMO, once one has moved away from the degraded jpg photos portrayed over the Internet, the difference between FF and MF becomes glaringly obvious.

You said you ordered your SL2 without any deposit. Obviously you have placed your order ahead of me.

I have just placed a $5.7k deposit for SL2 today to Leica.

Let’s see who gets the SL2 earlier.
