It is most likely more a matter of what other things the OP has on his iPhone 6 and how it is configured. Leica FOTOs ran fine on my iPhone 6 with iOS 11 and 12 revisions on it, and on my iPads configured similarly. It runs fine today on my iPhone 8 Plus with iOS 13, and on my iPads with iPadOS 13.

No developer can test every possible device configuration in the user community of X million users. And the WiFi connection complexity is as stated above, yes.

Something which hasn't been mentioned: Be sure your CL is upgraded to the latest firmware, v3.1, for best operation with Leica FOTOs. It will not connect with the current version of Leica FOTOs if the camera is not at the current firmware revision.

Try deleting the app and re-downloading it.

The fact that you and quote-unquote "professionals" haven't gotten it to work doesn't say anything. You just haven't figured out what's wrong yet. And it's something specific to your phone's configuration, since it works on so many other people's phones.

I don't give a hoot what the ratings are. I never look at the ratings. :)

Your suggestion also had been tried couple times already, but no effect, still won't work.   This Leica PHOTOS does has an issue of not able to connect to all phones, again couple more other people tired on there phones with my D-Lux 7, did not work either - while on the camera it showed: "Wi-Fi connection completed"...; on the phone, it would run and run and run for a longtime, then came up with a message: "Could not connect"  😂

However I reloaded the old "Image Shuttle", and seems working with the D-Lux 7.   Strange (bad for Leica's apps) that the old one works, but the "newer" Leica PHOTOS doest'n... 😟

Have you got the newest version of PHOTOS and the last firmware on the camera? It should connect smoothly.

If you are sure both are up to date, there is most likely something wrong with the WiFi on your camera and you should have it checked out.

Could someone help to explain why a CL is not able to connect with the Leica FOTOS app?  After multiple trial, each time it comes to show on my iPhone 6 as: "Could not connect, Check camera WI-FI is turned on and try again", but the CL WLAN is turned on, and in the "Connection type Create WLAN"...  Do I need to go find a dedicated Leica app for connecting with a CL only app?

Also noticed that on a D-Lux 7, when the Wi-Fi is on, there is a blue light to indicated the Wi-Fi on, but seems not seeing any light on the CL when the WLAN is turned on, is it normal?

your aging iPhone 6 is the problem

iPhone 6 is not supported in new iOS 13

FOTOS is at version 1.3.1 w/support for iOS 13

it is likely that something is not working as it should on FOTOS on the iPhone 6 - the developer should not have to maintain backwards compatibility for every iPhone (that is what happened to Windows)

Since the Leica PHOTOS is newly reloaded a week or so ago, it should be the newest version as well, but not working.   D-Lux 7 is the latest patch (from a month ago, since it's been out of stock for a long time in the States..., and just had in stock again not long ago), should be the last firmware?     Again as mentioned above, the D-Lux 7 doest'n not work with Leica PHOTOS  (but could work with the old "Image Shuttle")...

I know the iPhone 6 works fine with latest Leica FOTOs on an iPhone 6 ...  I tested that. Drastic maneuver but it would prove that you have a configuration problem or a hardware fault:

- erase and restore your iPhone to factory defaults.

- sign in on your AppleID

- download and install NOTHING but the Leica FOTOs app

- be sure your CL is at firmware v1.3

- Test

If that does not work, the WiFi in your iPhone is likely malfunctioning and you need to have it repaired or upgrade the iPhone to a newer model. The WiFi in your Leica CL might also be malfunctioning and require repair.

That's the bottom line. With good working iPhone and CL, properly configured, the Leica FOTOs app works well.

Sorry, guys, but "properly configured, the Leica Fotos app works well" means nothing more than "it works on my system". There are too many reports of Fotos not working with different devices for this to be a simple hardware fault in a few devices or cameras. Just because it works with your setup, it doesn't mean there is no problem with the Fotos app. It doesn't work well with my Huawei P10 and both my TL2 and CL.

The statement does not exclude potential faults in the software too, Paul. But the fact that it works well for A LOT OF PEOPLE (I'm willing to go out on a limb and say "the vast majority of people") using various configurations and not so well for some seems to indicate, to me anyway, that MOST of the faults are in the configurations of the particular hardware and system they are trying to interact with that expose or exacerbate issues at some level or another. :)

Wiping the systems to their defaults and testing on a simple, known-proven configuration should convince one that the basic operation is sound, or not. Do the above test with your Huawei P10 in the simple configuration of the CL providing the hotspot and no other network around. Then add other stuff, other complexities, to find out where the warts are, and fix them or report them to the companies to be fixed...

Leica Fotos is not important enough to me to want to wipe my phone and restart. I have already spent a lot of time trying to get it work (and I am fairly tech-savvy); sometimes it connects and sometimes it doesn't. Once it does, it stays connected most of the time, but it seems to be getting harder to connect in the first place. I've tried it at home, in busy cafes and in the middle of nowhere, so I don't think it's interference from other networks. I'd guess, and it's only a guess, that in looking for and connecting to the camera wifi Fotos is somehow getting tangled up with the phone's own wifi connection routines - hence switching off cellular data seems to make a difference, as does using the phone's wifi connection tools, not Fotos, to make the connection to the camera wifi. These in-phone wifi connection systems probably come in a number of versions, depending on the hardware they are managing - hence Fotos, which is trying to do the same thing, may struggle to deal with all the possible versions. But as I say, it's only a guess.

Fotos was a step forward from the previous, camera-specific, apps. I'll just wait till they produce the next attempt.

Interestingly, while the CL is also not working with the Leica PHOTOS, but would work with the old "Leica CL" app on the iPhone 6...

(similar to the D-Lux 7 could work with the "Image Shuttle" only, but can not work with the new "Leica PHOTOS")

As a recent buyer of the CL, I have been too busy making photos to investigate Fotos.

I will probably get around to it sometime, but is not high on my list of priorities.

Fotos is your cable release, use it when the camera is on a tripod. I first used it when doing some copy work on a copy stand. I use it frequently.

  • 5 weeks later...

Today a Leica representative showed me a beta version of the new Leica Fotos App. Dramatically improved download speed from the camera. Roughly 2-3 seconds for a 80 MB DNG from the new SL to the phone. And it will offer a sort of direct transfer from the app to Lightroom Mobile on the iPad. And there will be a separate app for the iPad. Finally. And we won't have to wait very long for the new version: 21st November, next week.😀

The same thing happened to me with TL2, I couldn't connect "Leica Photos" from my iphone 6. Following the instructions given in the thread, I got your connection.

I have to add something that happened to me and it was when I downloaded "Leica Photos", and after several attempts I realized that the switches shown in the image were on the left (off), I put them on the right (activated) as they appear in the attached image and it worked correctly.

The application, I suppose, will improve over time.
Regards.
