The Leica store in SoHo, NYC has a excellent condition used SL and mint condition used 24-90 lens for sale for $6,495, including accessories, battery but no boxes, however, it does include the Leica warranty for one year. I spoke to the sales person there today and he said that it was traded in by a repeat customer who is an amateur photographer.

This is a savings of over $1,500 from the out-of-stock special to buy a new SL and 24-90 lens for $7,995.

Given that I can return it, free of restocking fee, if I think that it is not of the quality represented, I took the plunge and ordered the kit. It should ship tomorrow and as I live in Philadelphia, it should arrive Tuesday. The sales guy told me that the boxes don't reduce the trade in value should the new SL2 become available. Since the lens is the keeper, I thought it a good deal to get into the SL system until the SL2 becomes available later this year.

I sprung for the SL M-lens adapter with my order. I'm looking forward to using my Noctilux 50mm on the SL body. I have heard that this is a great combination.

I will let you all know how I make out with this once it arrives.

Regards,
Bud James

After shooting Fuji X for 5 years, we’ll see how the increase in size and bulk wears on me.

i purchased the M10, my first Leica, almost two years ago. I have been shooting it almost exclusively since then because the image quality is amazing and I’m loving the rangefinder shooting experience. My Fuji XT3 has been sitting one the shelf except when I need a zoom lens and/or weather sealing. The SL should solve that problem.

Bud James

The SL really isn't that big, and with the M lenses on the SL is still very light and fun to shoot.
The 24-90 on the SL is truly a beast -- it's huge, bulky, and frightens the passerby (haha).  However, every-single-picture you take with that set up will be gorgeous, so you'll learn ways to lug it around on days when you want to shoot with that particular lens -- otherwise you'll toss an M lens on it and enjoy shooting at night more.

Both setups (your M10 and now SL) are real fun to play with and swap lenses with.
I fall in love with my M10 and can't imagine ever using another camera.  Then a week or so later I'll grab the SL and can't imagine why I'd ever use the M10.  It's schizophrenic camera love.

Enjoy

I received the used SL and 24-90 lens. The lens is mint condition. The body has a few minor wear points on the base plate. I took few images to check it out. Now I playing with the menus to learn the camera and make the initial adjustments.

It is a beast, big and heavy!

I purchased the M-adapter so I plan on shooting the SL with my Noctilux 50 f0.95 this weekend.

My Fuji kit is now officially listed for sale to finance this new purchase.

Congrats

you'll find you are taking this combo around more then you think

One bit of advice, buy the super light Sigma 45mm f2.8 when you want a light walkabout. It’s super sharp and well made and is lovely when you need to travel light

Enjoy!

I want to thank everyone for your comments and suggestions.

Now that I have been shooting with my "new" used SL and 24-90 lens for almost a week, here are my initial observations:

  • The SL with 24-90 is large and a heavy, however, the flexibility and image quality is amazing. This is the best zoom lens that I have every used and my experience includes several generations of Canon pro "L" zooms and all of the current excellent Fuji X zooms.
  • I love the EVF on the SL. Even though the SL design is 4 years old, the EVF is better than the class-leading Fuji XT3 that I just sold.
  • Using the M-adapter, I can finally use my Noctilux 50mm f0.95 with consistently sharp photos. The SL shooting experience is much faster than my M10 with the Visoflex.
  • My Super Elmar 18 is more fun to use on the SL than when on my M10 and Visoflex.
  • The SL shutter is whisper quiet, even when compared to my M10P.
  • SL Focus peaking is the best implementation of any camera I have personally used.
  • I shipped off the last of my Fuji X kit this past weekend. The proceeds from selling my entire Fuji X kit paid for my SL and 24-90 lens.
  • Other than a compact Sony RX100VII, I am completely switched over to Leica M10 and SL.
  • I might consider trading my SL body in for the soon-to-announced SL2 with Leica SoHo. I'm already on their waiting list. We'll see.
  • I will start looking for a mint condition used Leica SL 90-280 lens to buy to complete my kit.

Bud James

That zoom’s IQ is like the best primes throughout the range. You will be blown away. BTW, how do you feel about the upcoming SL2?

I want to see what it offers first and for how much. if the rumors are close, I will probably trade in my SL.

I also think you will be very impressed with the quality with the SL 90-280 lens. I know I am and I have always been a prime lens shooter. I don't use it that often and only take it with me if I am pretty sure I will use it. But when I do I am very happy.

Hi Bud,

I assume you already know this, but just in case...

When shooting with an M lens on the SL camera, once you compose your shot, "tap" on the rear "joystick" and this will zoom in for more accurate focusing.
Once your shot is composed, you can move the focus dot around a bit and hit an exact focus spot and then take the picture without having to recompose.
With the 0.95 lens, if you focus and then recompose just slightly it will throw off the focus point a bit.

I hope this made sense.  ha

Enjoy!

Not lucky enough to own this kit, Bud: congratulations. I'm sure you'll love it, and I'm quietly waiting for the SL2 (and wondering how much I can get for trading in my Q and CL....)

But as amazing as are all L lenses, the one that completely blows me away is the 16-35 zoom. It's nearly impossible to distinguish photos from that and photos from a MF camera. I would figure out how to own that lens someday.

I agree with you... and if you shop carefully/patiently you will find one for a good price..

I got the 16-35 in LNIB condition for 3500 USD. I will not be selling it any time soon :)

That's an absurd price for that lens. I would buy it at that price even if I didn't own a Leica camera! 🙂
