Hammertone just doesn't do it for me either but what's piquing my curiosity is that lightmeter - was that factory made as a new item or were (the 50units) they refurbished old/original meters

Sorry Romualdo, I don't have answer for that.

"Reworked Leicameter MR4", more informations here

My bad, only 25 pieces (not 50 as stated) for 25th Anniversary of Leica Shop Wien

I guess you'd have to ask Leica. I would have thought that they were refurbished units. If they had been a new production run from scratch I would have expected Leica to offer a non-hammertone version as a £500 or so collectable accessory for non-metered M film camera owners.

Remember that the Leicameter was not made by Leica.

My two bits worth. I used 35mm cameras with no integrated light meter even after my peers got their first Nikon FTNs (I think that's correct) and for twenty years I was okay with exposures on 35mm. I used a Gossen hand-held.

After I got my first M7 I was gobsmacked by how consistent exposures were. Contact sheets were acceptable to any editor.

Hello Pico,

Part of it might be that with an M7 you choose the aperture & the camera chooses the shutter speed. Even fractions of a shutter speed. Aperture preferred metering.

And also, with M7's there is always the nagging question of whether or not the  exposure system took into regard the little boxes on the film cartridge that told the camera the actual ISO of the film in that cartridge & what its latitude is.

With M1's thru M5's you could use fractional shutter speeds in many situations. Even though not that many people did that. I don't know how many models chronologically after the M5 that you can use fractional shutter speeds with.

Best Regards,

Michael

That never concerned me. I set the ISO manually and know each film's latitude.

That is interesting. When you set the ISO manually did you also set the shutter speed? Or did you let the camera do that?

I let the camera set the speed because I already know the upper/lower boundaries of its choice.

Michael, I am not particularly sophisticated except in my programming career. My photo life is best described as working in 'best fit parameters'  and fortunately photo processes have long been malleable. No editor in my career gave me grief for technique, although the idea of working for adan would give me pause.

Hello Pico,

I have seen some of your photos.

You are both modest & highly skilled.

Best Regards,

Michael

Why not buy a Fed 3

RF just to find out if meter less suits you

Wondering what is FED 3

I see now that FED 3 would detract Leica lovers from RF Leica 😨 beauties like MP or M-A or other Leica M 😇

Hello everyone,

just saw this thread coming up again,

how are the thoughts and feelings towards the M-A - MP decision?

I sold my black paint MP, that I bought used, a lovely camera, but I just want the M-A. And will get me a chrome version of it sometime soon.

Whats that story behind the covered battery door in the M-A body? There is an actual whole that has been just filled or sticked over with something?

Why would the M-A have problems with film advancing but the MP not?

My MP had to be sent in to Leica because of a mount problem, it was 6 weeks old, when I bought it from the first owner.

I wanna perfect body! I wanna perfect soul! (Lil rock music reference here..)

I prefer the meterless body, and I am happy to hear that the M-A has a slightly "better", more direct shutter, better framelines(?) and allegedly brighter viewfinder.

Of course you like to hear and read what confirms your thoughts and decisions anyways, right? 😆

Thank you for your thoughts on this.

@Leon Berg

I don't think so that M-A is better than MP.

While I used them along, just saw some subtle differences but if not used along would be ignored by many users.

In 90% of time M-A = MP with no battery as so many people stated.

My most benefit is in the viewfinder, no aggressive red LED, complete bottom lines, I even saw some more contrast in M-A vf (maybe non sense here).

Then I do appreciate lack of battery cover 😇

(or selftimer of older M4 etc., better grip, maybe ?)

like I stated here, for horizontal or vertical framing

Thank you for the insight.

I was curious to understand what lack of battery cover meant? Is there a whole underneath, meaning that just a thin plate is covering the battery whole? Maybe because the use the same base as the MP and just cover it up?
Also, what’s with the rumors about advance problems?

I know to many it sounds like nonsense, but for me being purely mechanical without any metering aid is also a whole different philosophy and changes the experience. I had the M3 and very much loved it.

the MP I had was wonderful, too, but I couldn’t just take out the battery, that’s not working for me.

I am looking forward to my chrome version that I want to get around end of the year.

May I ask if there is the possibility to get a plate without serial number and engravings? Not a big fan of the „Leica Camera Wetzlar Germany“ on top.

You can get a black M-A. There's no engraving on the black one.

I wanted a completely mechanical camera, since I use a handheld meter and don't trust in-camera ones. If the M-A hadn't existed, I would have bought an M-P and never put batteries in it. But I'd rather go all the way and get the real thing, rather than settle for a compromise. Personally, I find the battery cover ugly. It looks like a big mole on its cheek. I could live with it if I had no choice (or if I actually needed the meter), but it's nice that I don't have to.
