That is a very good question, Pete!

Not knowing the answer myself (it had never even crossed my mind to wonder 'why?') I've just asked SWMBO (or 'Elle à qui il Faut Obéir') and it seems that the French use STOP instead of their own word on a regular basis.

I can confirm that in France the STOP sign is in use.

In Thailand we need to know (it's stop in thai script) but the sign has same shape
