All that hoarded cash with no SL2 worth buying? It will have to go somewhere. What would you buy instead, as therapy?

75mm SL Cron + 16-35mm SL Zoom; or re-buy a nice M6 and 50mm Cron and a bunch of film...

Decisions, Decisions.  Hopefully it will be an easy decision.

I was actually thinking about a R5-7 for fun and a 28mm, 35-70mm and 50mm R, as I can use them on the SL as well ;)

Have still to hoard the cash but  if the SL2 disappoints me the remedy will be GFX50S or S1R.
It depends on which remedy helps best against the depression. Have to test both pills...

I’ve been searching for two years to find and bond with a system to complement the M.  That quest will likely end with either the SL2 or X1Dii.  Pros and cons either way, but a lot will also depend on the respective lens roadmaps.

The recently registered Leica 2998 camera will have a new AC adapter (ACA-DC17) and a new cable release (RC-SCL6)

Well, this at least makes it highly unlikely that it's just going to be another new wristwatch....

Weird DC17 is Sofort battery name...

If it disappoints, then I'll be right at the decision point I was before I decided to wait for it.  S1R + L glass 5k a pop or X1Dii with H-glass at 3.5k per.  Either way, theres a lot of coin involved.

Having looked at images from both SL lenses (at least I have those) and XCD lenses (I know, website images aren't a good way to test, but I do respect Vieri's reviews), I'm not sure that the SL lenses are that much better than the XCD lenses in practise.  I can't tell the difference, though I guess I could if I set up a tripod and did some fruit and vegetable assessments, but I don't see the point.

Currently, the SL has the three zooms and 5 primes, covering 16-280 at various f stops.  I have the three zooms and the 50 Summilux & 75 Summicron, and they are without exception fantastic.

There is one XCD zoom and 9 primes, covering 21-230mm (17-180mm full frame equivalent).  I don't see much in it.

The cameras are, however, quite different.  I'm not really sure they are comparable.  To my mind, the SL is more rugged and faster all round.  The XCD is also weather sealed, but it is a slower proposition.  That's my perception, but I may be wrong.  Apart from the 80/1.9 (equiv 63/1.5) which I see as more of a walkabout camera, I can see the XCD spending most of its time with the 21mm on a tripod with filters.  The 135mm & 1.7 converter is in my future, if my crystal ball can be trusted.

That said, I am assuming that the X1D will partner better with the M cameras (offering the 21-75 range) than with the SL.

That's my thinking, anyway.

I chose the X1D because it provides better IQ in a much smaller package. With the L-mount alliance and the release of the Summicrons the gap in size advantage is dwindling, but the difference in IQ is still quite significant. I'm following the release of the SL2, but in the meantime I still prefer the Hassy and it's lens selection.

I’ve briefly demoed both systems, twice, and made my own prints.  Weather sealing has been a prerequisite. As such, I also used the S006 for a couple of weeks (with S zoom), so the SL-type interface has proven to be comfortable. While the ultimate proof is in actual use,  I’ve still closely followed the lens releases and reviews of both SL and X1D systems, including Vieri’s (although his shooting habits and subject matter are vastly different than mine... primarily handheld, no extended exposures, subjects other than grand landscape, not much wide angle, b/w more than color, etc,  but still interesting technically).

The X1D body design, interface and handling is among the best modern cameras I’ve tried; even better than the SL form factor. It just wasn’t ready for ‘prime time’ IMO. But the prime lenses are more appealing from a size standpoint than the SL line (I’d prefer the XCD 90 over the 80, which seems to have noisy focus breathing and lacks internal focusing,  albeit superb optically and faster). Speed isn’t my priority. But the line is still young, and an extended roadmap would be useful. The forthcoming zoom (28-60 equivalent) is reportedly stellar.

The SL also appeals on many levels, and I suspect the SL2 will even more from a body design standpoint (perhaps closer to X1D or mini-S).  IBIS would increase its appeal for my shooting habits. Native zooms are terrific optically, and a set would cover beyond what I need range-wise, but are simply too big and heavy for my taste.  And even the primes push the size envelope. I could see, however, owning the 24-90 (despite the size and lack of internal focus, although useful OIS), and supplementing it with a native prime or two, or perhaps just M lenses (but not weather sealed). I'd like to see some smaller (even if slower or more narrow range) native lenses, but I won't hold my breath.

There’s no perfect system, and I’m beyond my days of owning lots of systems.  Been there, done that since the 70’s, from 35mm to 8x10, and almost every format in between. Cost is not the issue, and GAS has passed, so to speak. IQ these days, particularly at my print sizes, is also hardly an obstacle, FF or digital MF.   Sure, there are nuances, but I can often achieve bigger differences from shooting, PP and print methods than from cameras or lenses.  But I do want to shoot wider and longer lenses than my M, which for now is mostly concentrated between 28-50, and in a weather sealed package that I can bond with.

Good choices to have, for all of us.

Jeff

😂 There is a dedicated thread SL vs, X1D. The X1D comments above aren’t even relevant. This is about the SL2 sensor and we don’t know yet if it will have at Base gain a FWC of 605000e-, with 3.618e- read noise which amounts to a monstrous 104.5dB or 17.4 stops of dynamic range, on-chip PDAF, 20 fps at 16 bit, 8K video, IBIS. The X1D should be compared to the M.
