Does anybody have a good advice which kind of 3/8" male to 1/4" female screw adapters to get to mount a Manfrotto tripod plate onto a Leica IIIc? I already have this kind of bushing which fits nicely on my Leica M3, but the base plate of the IIIc is thinner and therefore also the screw mount for the tripod plate. The general 3/8" male to 1/4" female screw adapter which I have remains sitting a few mm outside on the IIIc base plate and doesn't fully insert into the 3/8" hole. I didn't find anything about this online, but I am sure some might have experienced this issue with Leica screw-mount cameras.

Not sure about this because filing it down will affect the thread, and I am afraid it won't screw into the fitting. But maybe worthwhile trying.

I was thinking of seating the adapter and then filing off the part that extended above the plate.

Ah, okay. Unfortunately this doesn't work because it has the indents to unscrew it there on top. If I file this part off, I never get it out of there.

I'm sure filing it down will work, the thread is very coarse so you won't have any problems engaging it in the baseplate. The Manfrotto plates have a rebate in the rubber material around the screw anyway, so if it still doesn't fit flush another alternative would be to glue another layer of thin rubber onto the plate to make up the required thickness, but not too thick or the screw won't engage enough.

This fits.  It states for Rolleiflex/Rolleicord but as it is thinner than the standard 3/8-1/4 adapter fits my IID and IIF perfectly.  I purchased 4 and have adapted my 2 Leica LTM's and 2 Rollei's.

Thanks so much, this is exactly what I was looking for. I placed the order. Great community here - very fast responses and solutions to questions!

If both are 3/8 inch can you not get a 3/8 screw for the Manfrotto bit?

Gerry

I probably could, but I don't want to hassle with different kind of tripod plates for different kind of cameras - this is just waiting for confusion/misplacements. I prefer to stick to one tripod mount which I use for all my film and digital cameras (I have three Manfrotto 1/4 screw plates). John W.'s reply was exactly what I was looking for.

Aside: one Manfrotto hex plate has an extra hole to carry a spare 3/8" adapter which is easy to move onto the 1/4" screw.  It also has a large flush-mounted screw on the bottom rather than the clunky knob on other hex plate models.  This part is very often described with the wrong model number. Beware of Asian rip-offs.

The Rolleiflex screw adapter recommended by JohnW (post #8) arrived today and fits perfectly. It came even with a nice screw driver to tighten or unscrew this kind of adapters. Thanks again for this advice!

Martin, to anticipated use of any Leica on a tripod, I recommend Leica's tripod head that works for 3/8" and 1/4" by morphing (my term) to accommodate what is necessary at either end - tripod and/or camera. It is a brilliant solution.

Perhaps one of our better informed members can point to a specific model.

Mine is the taller head with the mark "D" below the trade mark. I think Leica's designation is KGOON.  Not sure.

Thanks, but I am vested into the Manfrotto tripod system and don't consider getting another tripod head. I am using my tripods with Leica, Sony, Hasselblad, Mamiya, and Canon gear. 3/8" fit have only my cameras made before 1960. But it's certainly a good advice and useful to add it here into this thread if somebody else looks for a similar solution.
