I understood we only had to update the camera FW, but lenses would be automatic, is that not so?

Once you attach a lens that requires firmware update, the update process starts by itself immediately. It takes a few minutes. SL needs to be restarted. All user settings in the SL are wiped out, including resetting the numbering. 🤮😡

So if you imagine you have ALL lenses in the L-range (SL ones) ... if you’re lucky this means all seven, you need to go through all seven firmware updates, and your camera is reset seven times to the starting point. You’d better make sure you’ve saved the settings to the SD card. And reload them only at the end of the firmware upgrades.

The lens FW update should start automatically the first time you mount the lens to the updated body and switch on the camera.

Although it is only one click to do so there is an alternative: just export your settings at the very beginning to a second SD card and re-Import from there after all lenses have been updated.

If you leave the SD Card with the update and saved profiles in the camera after updating, switch off, change lens, and then switch on again it updates and in my case at least retains the user preferences rather than defaulting to factory settings.

Like others I am surprised that the 16-35 goes through the motions of updating but appears not to change the firmware version - but so what.

The moral seems to be that one should perhaps update all ones lenses after updating the camera if a lens update is also on the SD Card or else you risk wasting time on location and, since the camera is unlikely to have the SD Card with the update in it, possibly lose all the user preferences.

I had exacty the same experience, even though I had clicked on the "save profiles to SD card" choice while starting the update process.

I installed the 3.6 update today and when I put a R lens or a Voigtländer lens on, both with Novoflex adapters, it says in the menu that image stabilisation is ON. I don´t know how that should work :-) I´m also quite sure that this option was not available before. I think I better turn it off, maybe it does some fancy things ...? Thank you.

My wife asked if the new firmware updates the photographer as well. Should I be worried?

Just updated to firmware 3.6, but noticed that besides the 90-280 prompting itself for an automatic lens update when first mounted on the SL with firmware 3.6, other lenses besides 24-90 and 90-280 (not mentioned to be receiving updates) also went through lens updating when first mounted on the SL with firmware 3.6. Namely, both the SL 50/1.4 and 16-35 automatically updated when mounted, but I have no idea what was updated since it was not mentioned in the firmware notes. 

The 90-280, 50/1.4 and 16-35 SL are all shown to be on lens firmware 1.1 now. Quite perplexing, since back when firmware 3.0 released a year or more ago the 90-280 already received a prior update, so it should be on something like lens firmware version 1.2, but no matter how many updates, it still shows to be on 1.1.
