SL lenses are way too large. No excuse here. Leica got lazy.

Even Sony can produce excellent full frame AF lens. Yet being small.

Humongous full frame L-mount lenses are crazy stupid

Leica has to go back to its roots : very small with excellent image quality at very high price.

AF lenses are more or less bulky actually. My Nikkor ones are compact indeed (here a 50/1.4 compared to a 'Lux M) but they come from the last century and i don't know if the gigantism illness has spread to Nikon as well .

Nikon S lenses Latest Z system are much smaller than equivalent Leica L lenses. Latest example, I took delivery of S 50mm f1.8 it is half the wight of just announced Leica L. 50mm f2, filter thread is 62 for Nikon and 67mm for Leica.  Nikon announced 85mm f1.8 which will be similar in size to similar L, zooms are lighter and smaller, more importantly optically all S lenses are excellent photographic tools.

Not as big, so it can't be as good!

One thing is for sure, smaller is much easier to live with and use in real photographic situations, unless of course you must have specific brand.
