You guys have been very helpful so wanted to check here before I return my M10 or send it for repair...

My 35/2 Cron has been working awesome on my new M10 until this weekend it stopped smoothly going into focus and started to skip when I was aligning things in the parallax box. Then it stopped skipping and it doesn't matter how much I turn the focus on the lens, the parallax box in my VF is frozen and I can't focus anymore.

Few questions:

1. Is there a button I'm not pressing or have to reset on the M10 to get it back to normal? (I read the manual and there's nothing)

2. Could it be a brand new lens (I doubt this)?

3. Is it a parallax dud and needs to be returned to BH (camera is not even 10 days old so easier to return then repair).?

The most usual cause for this kind of komplaint is an obstruction of the small window in front of the camera. Fingers are the most frequent culprits, but camera straps are also mentioned from time to time. In short, check to see if something is in front of the camera when the RF fails to work.

Might be an obstruction like a finger but that normally causes the rangefinder patch to disappear altogether until the the finger moves.

It's probably more likely to be your hellicoid follower is stuck or is not connecting with the lens's hellicoid.  Take the lens off your M10 and you'll see a small round piece of metal on a sprung arm at the top of the opening where you put the lens.  When it's working properly the hellicoid (the threaded brass piece in the teardrop on the top of the lens mount) moves the round metal piece (the follower) into the camera and alters the what shows in the rangefinder patch.  You should be able to push the follower gently into the camera and it should return of its own accord.  If you look through the viewfinder while pushing teh follower then you should see something happening in the rangefinder patch.  If not, then it's off to the camera hospital.

If that's working okay then it might be that the follower is not making contact with the follower because it's out of adjustment.  If you place the lens as though you were going to attach it to the camera you should be able to see whether the follower is likely to make contact with the hellicoid.  If it looks like it's not going to then it will need adjustment and it's time to visit the camera hospital.

Same thing happened to me many times.

If you want to, just push/pull the roller (gently) a couple of times.

In my past experiences, it worked so many times when they were stuck by a lens or whatever.

At that time, when it was very cold, grease froze up after taking the M out from hotter place .

Or when it was very hot with some humidified dirt ...

I tried moving it gently and now it won't move at all. Then I can pull it forward so it'll make contact with the lens and then it starts skipping and sticking again.

I don't know if it's an easy fix or if it's a grease issue? The grease spot is visible so it seems like the screw is greased well.

Jeff who is DAG? Sorry new to the process.

Don Goldberg, a highly regarded, long time independent Leica repair and parts service. He is faster, less expensive and often provides better results than Leica NJ.  He’s fixed things for me Leica could not. I’ve yet to see one bad word about him here or elsewhere.

It is worth a peek at the list of camera repairers in the historica section. Besides DAG, I've also had very good results with Sherry Krauter and Youxin Ye, as have a number of other Leica owners. IMHO these are the top 3 in the USA - but there are also some excellent others...unfortunately often their turnaround times may be months rather than days or weeks.

Sherry will not touch a digital body.

If it is a new camera, and even if second hand, this sounds like a warranty job. Take it back to your dealer or contact Leica directly.

Yeah it's a new one and BH took it back no questions asked.

I'm a little freaked out now, how sensitive are these hellicoid follower things?

I mean it's the primary connection between your eyes and the lens-if I'm out of a camera every so often because of this it'll be problematic.

Always put the lens in close focus when mounting it and line up the red dots before putting the lens near the body.

It's not something that's happened to me in many many years of owning Leica cameras so it's not at all common and it's important to remember that Leica's with the same hellicoid and follower system have been used reliably in the harshest conditions by war correspondents for many years.

Pete.
