Does anyone know if it possible to attach a round style vented hood to the 35mm summarit as opposed to the squashed coke can design that comes with the camera?

Yes, I use one for my Summarit-M 2.5/35mm so screw-in 39mm vented hood.

Maybe you must unscrew the protection ring as I've done before screwing the hood.

If your Summarit-M is newer 2.4/35mm, just use 46mm in place of 39mm.

I see the draw of the vented hood but the provided hood provides minimal intrusion into the finder’s projected 35mm line, which I appreciate even more after using my 35mm f2 Summicron ASPH with the vented hood, which intrudes into the field of view much worse than the provided clip-on hood and does little better in terms of actual protection from side light. 

The improvement the vented hood provides is more aesthetic than practical, like whether I want to wear my gold Hamilton or enamel-faced Seiko watch that day.

I prefer small lenses and hoods.

I use hoods with not a lot of depth or diameter to provide protection from bumps and knocks more than from flare.  

I recently found this hood on eBay that works great on my 75mm Summarit-M f/2.5 but would also work nicely on the newer f/2.4 Summarits which are all 46mm.

This hood is only available (that I’ve found) in 46mm as it is intended for use with the Panasonic 20mm f/1.7

As you may see in the (down & dirty) iPhone photo, it screws in to either the lens itself or into my B+W uv filter, as seen.  This can be done with the protection ring attached to the lens.

If anyone is interested, you may do an eBay search for:  Etsumi lens hood metal inner hood 46mm

And no, I don't get any vignetting.  I did a test at f/16 with the 75mm and saw none.

No vignetting on 75mm lenses may mean a lot of it on 35mm ones with the same hood. Not to dissuade you, just a warning.

Hey! Anyone know if the 28mm Summicron Hood 12471 can fit the Summarit 35 2.4? Or in general, if the Screw-in E46 Lens hood can be physically interchanged?

There are several E46 Leica hoods, the 12471 being dedicated to the M 28/2 v2 only. The 12471 can fit M 35/1.4 FLE, 21/3.4 asph and 24/3.8 lenses too but the hood cannot be screwed tight on the two latters and thus will bend accordingly. No idea about the M 35/2.4 sorry.

I use a round vented hood with my 35mm Summarit.  I can't say whether it works as well as the original hood, but it was certainly cheaper!

@bussta Hi, I’m not sure if you are talking about f2.5 or f2.4 Summarit but the Summilux 35 FLE hood works perfectly with the f2.4 35mm and 50mm Summarit lenses (and vice versa).

I like it because the black finish is similar to the lens, and the diameter of the part that threads onto the lens is a similar diameter to the lens barrel itself.

I don't notice corner shading at any aperture on the 35, so I think you should be safe with a 50mm and it's narrower field of view.

The stock hood on the 2.4 is awesome! Vented hoods are silly. On a well designed one you actually can sort of see through the slots when viewing through the finder, but they are big, long, and they provide minimal protection from veiling flare which many Leica lenses desperately need.
