The other way is that many other modern device charges from a USB-C cable, so by packing one charging pack and USB C cables you have compatibility with the S1R charger. While I appreciate that everyone's use case is different, I personally prefer the approach that Panasonic has taken here. One small charging unit with 5 USB outputs, a set of short cables and just one "to wall" connection with a local plug/adapter and you're set.
Danny Burk Posted July 28, 2019 Share #5 Posted July 28, 2019 I think it's awful too. There should at least be a "normal" alternate offered.
ron777 Posted July 28, 2019 Share #6 Posted July 28, 2019 Frankly, I’d be happy with an aftermarket dual battery charger.

douglas ball Posted July 28, 2019 Share #8 Posted July 28, 2019 I agree that when I first saw the charger I was surprised, but then realized that with a USB-C cable I could charge directly into the camera from my car or laptop. I could never do that with the SL. I now carry a cable with me in my bag at all times. This is one of many things I like best about the S1-R.

Genius.... Despite the dire warnings in the manual it appears (from my experience so far) that you can dispense with most of the bits ..... either plug the camera in direct to any USB outlet or just use the charger alone connected to a similar USB cable. The only difference with the Charger/Transformer 2 cable combo is the speed. I've ditched the transformer and replaced all cables with shorter ones and these days travel with a 4 USB port Syncwire plug which comes with several socket outlet options and is very compact. Phone, Battery/Camera, iPad and Powerbank all get charged simultaneously overnight. I just wish everything was now USB-C. A Nitecore charger version would be nice (hint, hint) to reduce the cable count even further ......
tom.w.bn Posted July 29, 2019 Share #12 Posted July 29, 2019 Finally a camera with USB-C and charging. Thank you Panasonic. I leave the battery charger at home and use the same type of cable I charge my phone for charging the camera.

jrp Posted August 17, 2019 Share #18 Posted August 17, 2019 I need to rationalise my chargers for travel, since usb-c charges the apple products and the Panasonic. The only difference between the chargers is their Wattage. I assume that the devices with lower wattage requirements will not suffer when charged by a higher wattage charger? Lower draw devices will just draw the current they need. As long as the voltage is the same (5V for all USB devices) you're fine. Hooking up higher draw devices on low amp chargers is also OK. They'll just take longer to charge. My charging is all done from a 6 port USB charger (2.4 amps per socket). I can charge all my devices at once except my laptop and drone batteries. If you want 3.0 amps the Nintendo USBC charger for the Switch is a good choice. Gordon
