Donzo98 Posted July 22, 2019 Share #1 Posted July 22, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have been a happy SL user... like I am sure most of you have been as well. I'm debating upgrading to the S1R. I use my SL with the 16-35, 50 and 75 SL... as well as the 50 Noctilux and 10mm Voigtlander. I also occasionally use some manual focus Nikon stuff. I have a Q2, and love the extra resolution. Potentially, dipping my feet in, but I have read that there are some issues... below is a post from FM. "OK so here is EXACTLY what happens: 35SL: On M mode it's fine. Set it to AFC or AFS and it ticks... After a few shots the aperture starts to close up to f/16 and three things happens (especially in back light). 1) it just can't focus because it's stopped down to f/16 and it just cannot see anymore. 2) It manages to hit focus and it takes a shot at f/16 but the focus is never where it says. 3) It will focus and expose for F/16 but the second you take the shot the aperture will magically open up at the point of exposure and you'll get a blurry high ISO overblown shot. 16-35SL/50SL/75SL/90SL: It'll also periodically stop down the lens and focus will "cock up" and won't work. No ticking until ample use and the lens just starts to glitch out and the EVF gets laggy and sometimes the camera freezes while writing to the card. This is all happening on the S1 after v1.2 update.... I put my 35SL on my friends v1.2 S1 and it does the same thing (haven't tried my other SL lenses)... BUT when he uses his Panny lenses NO ISSUE AT ALL. Also tried the S1R v1.2 in the shop and same thing with the 35SL, ticking and then aperture cocks up. Tried a v1.1 S1 at the shop and no problems with aperture blades BUT still ticking. So now I'm convinced that anyone on here who has an S1 or S1R running v1.2 and any SL lens but mainly 35SL will note this issue. Robert, I'm shocked your 35SL isn't doing this because I'm pretty sure it's not my lens." I love my SL glass... and it's not going anywhere. I would love to hear your thoughts on the S1R upgrade. Thanks, Don
Advertisement Posted July 22, 2019 Posted July 22, 2019 Hi Donzo98, Take a look here Happy with your S1R??. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Timkr Posted July 23, 2019 Share #2 Posted July 23, 2019 I have the S1r and the SL and live the s1r. It’s great with the SL lenses and even better with the noctilux. The ibis makes a world of difference. I have experience none of the issues described above. BTW, still loving the SL 75 :).

Do you miss the recognition of the 6 bit coding that the SL offers?? Are you using the S1R primarily now?? You planning on selling your SL? Debating S1R vs waiting for SL2 (which could be a long while).
Timkr Posted July 23, 2019 Share #4 Posted July 23, 2019 The S1r pops up a screen with the FL and asks if you want to change it. It seems to know it’s a 50. I am contemplating selling the SL but hanging on for a bit based on the issues reported. I’m head to katmai Friday and taking the s1r and 90-280, anxious to see how it performs. Kind of looking at the Sony a7riv. Too many options these days.

Yup... lots of options. i think the SL glass is so good though. Tough to beat it. Sony looks great spec wise, but not excited about changing mounts. Ideal situation would be the AF of the Sony combined with our glass. I may try to play with an S1R if I can find one locally. Have a great trip!! scott kirkpatrick Posted July 23, 2019 Share #6 Posted July 23, 2019 (edited) I bought an S1R on the last day that B&H was offering a significant trade-in discount, knowing that it would be a long time before SL2s start shipping and I get to the head of the queue for one. I'm enjoying using it with an APO 35 SL, less impressed with how it performs with an M 21/3.4, but as JonoSlack likes to say, M lenses belong on M cameras. Also I find the way that manual lenses are handled on the Lumix to be pretty complicated, while the support for the SL electronically controlled lens is quite effective, once I learn not to be confused by all of its tricks. I have found the joystick control for locked AF while in M mode on the SL very intuitive, but the S1R's equivalent joystick actions less effective. With a lens as good as the APO 35, there are indeed scenes where the extra MPxes pay off. Edited July 23, 2019 by scott kirkpatrick
Ingo Posted July 23, 2019 Share #7 Posted July 23, 2019 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) My SL-35 also ticks on the S1R but doesn't stop down (FW 1.1 and 1.2) I have reported the 'tick-issue' already to Leica (you should do the same). My workaround is to switch form AFC or AFS into manual focus mode, reduce the the 'magnification field' to minimum and use the back-button focus for autofocus which works for most of the motives if they are not to close to the camera. Donzo98 Posted July 26, 2019 Author Share #9 Posted July 26, 2019 Got it today!! I really like it so far. Exactly what I wanted... brighter EVF in the sun, IBIS, and higher resolution. Used it with my 75 SL, and looking to trying with the 0.95 Noct.
Alistairm Posted July 26, 2019 Share #10 Posted July 26, 2019 I very much like my S1R. I am using it almost exclusively with Leica SL lenses and haven't updated the firmware! No issues at all for me.

Donzo98 Posted July 26, 2019 Author Share #12 Posted July 26, 2019 (edited) I love it with the noct. Have fun I need to figure that out... I want to use the picture in picture mag. Do you have that set to button?? Once I attach the lens... do I need to switch the focus button switch to MF?? Or does it do it automatically?? Once you have set your preferrable buttons, you can use the body (almost) as simple as the SL. At least for me/my use. (C1=mechanical shutter; C2 = electronic shutter; single/continuous/manual focus on the dedicared back-button, and focus on the two back thumb buttons, decoupled from the shutter releasen button).
