My apology to all those outside the USA for the colloquial reference to Eskimo Pie. What a pity you can't share one of our most redoubtably decadent methods of committing slow cardiovascular suicide :D

Back on topic, in regard to serial number batches, be aware that black and silver bodies are assigned to different batches, separated by one or more digits in the 6th column.

I was told be Leica last week, that M8's are built in serial number batches of around 2,000. Therefore at any time, depending upon which hot shoe the assembler picks up, the serial numbers can vary forwards or backwards by this 2,000 amount within a build batch. The initial batch lasted up until the end of December, so that a camera in this batch even if it was built just before the end of the year, could have a very early serial number like mine, of 3100302.

"...depending upon which hot shoe the assembler picks up,..."

hmmm... this could explain the discrepancies between hotshoe s/n and firmware-written s/n that someone has observed...would be interesting to look at assembly line at work...
