jonoslack Posted July 30, 2007 Share #2 Posted July 30, 2007 Hello I'm ready to pull the trigger on a M8 but would like to know what is the starting Serial # for the latests ones. Toodles! HI Julian I really think that the numbers go 'back and forth'. I suspect they make a batch of bodies, and the serial number is led from this (because it's on the hot shoe mount). Still, the first batch are definitely 'sold' and I don't know that there are any problems with any of the bodies produced from January onward. I'd buy with confidence! jaapv Posted July 30, 2007 Share #3 Posted July 30, 2007 Leica serial numbers have always been not very reliable indicators of age, except for lenses (but even then - the batch production thing is nothing new) One thing is certain however: Leica is building M8's as fast as they can to keep up with deliveries. Any camera you buy now is sure to be straight from the assembly line.
Shootist Posted July 30, 2007 Share #4 Posted July 30, 2007 I bought a second M8, black, from B&H on 6/6/07 and received a replacement M8 for my original chrome unit from Leica NJ on 6/10/07, that's 4 days apart. Black unit has serial # 319xxxx and chrome unit is 3108xxx. That's a difference of 82000 digits between them. There's just NO tellin.

luigi bertolotti Posted July 30, 2007 Share #6 Posted July 30, 2007 I think that dealing with s/n is an impossible exercise, nowadays... if the problem is that you wish to be assured you receive a camera just "out of the factory" , things are rather simple, expecially if you have already chosen the dealer to buy from : - If he has the camera on stock (unprobable...) check the firmware version: ought to be 1.102 on an "untouched" box. - If the dealer tells you have to wait for a rather long and unprecise time (2 months ?)... you'll surely receive a just-from-factory body. - My dealer told me that a 3rd possibilty can exist... in a certain country, it seems that if a certain dealer has an order, and the importer/distributor cannot give a precise schedule.. but another dealer in the same country has the item on stock... or even a definite schedule... an agreement exists for "interchange" between dealers with the approval of Leica official distributor/importer (or at least, so seems to be in Italy... these of course are strictly locally managed policies to optimize in some way the distribution/logistics7warehousing/billing...) I quote this story for when I ordered my M8, and wanted it chrome, my dealer hadn'it (had 2 blacks on stock) and told me he tried this way... but at the end I had to wait it from the factory in about 50 days ( a pleasure to see a box fresh from Solms... )
Pham Minh Son Posted July 30, 2007 Share #7 Posted July 30, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just bought mine in black but thinking seriously switching to chrome. Does anyone has both of these and may like one over another?
Shootist Posted July 30, 2007 Share #8 Posted July 30, 2007 I just bought mine in black but thinking seriously switching to chrome. Does anyone has both of these and may like one over another? I have both black and chrome. I first got a chrome one because that was the first one available that I could find. After getting it I thought I'd really like the black one. I had to send my chrome model back and at that time I bought a second one in black. Once I got the black one I found I really liked the chrome over the black, I have always had chrome M's and to me chrome says Leica M. So I like the chrome better then the black. It is all personal preference.
glowie Posted July 30, 2007 Author Share #9 Posted July 30, 2007 Thanks for the response guys! I'm buying the M8 from B&H, I have very good experience dealing with them and I'm having it delivered to NJ so I don't have to pay sales tax. I just want to make sure that I don't end up with one of the First batch ( too much teething problems from what I've read from other owners). I'll be parting with 3 Canon L lenses that I seldom use just to fund this baby, I just don't want to give myself any reason to bang my head on to a brick wall ( i keeeddd!). Thanks! jonoslack Posted July 30, 2007 Share #10 Posted July 30, 2007 I just bought mine in black but thinking seriously switching to chrome. Does anyone has both of these and may like one over another? Hi there I have both - they both look old fast if you use them a lot - still, my favorite 'look' is a black body with silver lenses (silly, but good!) On the other hand I do like the Silver one too . . . . no, maybe the black is best (it does look smaller). Still silver does look very good - and the retro look is very unobtrusive! Seriously, they're both great, I don't think you'll be dissatisfied with either of them.

I know well 3 or 4 Sigismondi in my town (Brescia, Italy) and would never give a vicious advice to a people with this name.. chrome, chrome, chrome... then for the 2nd body You'll see... Yeah if you ever plan on having 2 bodies it make sense to have one black and one chrome. This makes it real simple to tell them apart.
Bill W Posted July 30, 2007 Share #14 Posted July 30, 2007 I would venture to guess that any M8 body from B&H is current production since they were backordered forever till the past month or so. Now if you are looking for a new lens for that M8, good luck!!!!!!!

Black/black, black/silver, silver/silver, silver/black--all look very classy. Of course, we buy them for how they work, not for how they look. ttriolo Posted July 30, 2007 Share #16 Posted July 30, 2007 I never have warmed up to a black lens on chrome body but the reverse seems just fine. Is that just weird on my part or do others feel the same way?
Shootist Posted July 30, 2007 Share #17 Posted July 30, 2007 I never have warmed up to a black lens on chrome body but the reverse seems just fine. Is that just weird on my part or do others feel the same way? No not one bit. To me the color of the lens really doesn't matter or the color of the lens on a chrome or black body. It's all in how they work and the images they produce. Not how they look. Right now all I own is black lenses. Not because that is what I wanted but that was all that was available when I bought them. If some had been chrome it wouldn't of mattered at all. Guest tummydoc Posted July 30, 2007 Share #18 Posted July 30, 2007 I much prefer the black camera and lens because if I cover the logos with electrician's tape, when I bring the camera up to my face people on the streets are fooled into believing I'm eating an Eskimo Pie rather than attempting to take their picture. A silver camera and lens lacks that cloaking effect

A silver camera and lens lacks that cloaking effect I know another Doc does the same thing with his camera. I guess the second body will be chrome since I already got the black already. But if I get my choice and to do it over again, I would get the Gold first.

What the heck is Eskimo Pie that it should look like a black M8...? AFAIK it isn't available in little old UK.
