Agreed, a more precise central AF point would allow people to be more confident in what the AF point is actually choosing as the point of focus. I expect that by improving that alone, a large number of the AF failures would go away. I try to compensate for this as much as possible by finding a flat surface that encompasses the entire AF circle, but it is not always possible or practical. Certainly it is too large to accurately pick out an eye in an environmental portrait, for example. If the AF point was a smaller circle, say a bit smaller than the cross, I think it would be more consistent.

Neil, I think you'd be better served by the 90mm + 135mm combo for portraits - the first for wider ones, the latter for headshots & closer compositions.

Yes, HC lenses do work with the X1D retaining autofocus, provided lend FW is 18.0.0.0 or later, see here: https://www.hasselblad.com/x-system-lenses/xh-lens-adapter/
