waytoosquirrelly Posted June 27, 2019 Share #1  Posted June 27, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) I recently purchased a Leica 75mm Noctilux f/1.25 lens. On page EN (English) 23 of the lens' Instruction Manual there are recommendations that when shooting an M-series camera with the 75mm Noctilux installed that the photographer support the lens with one hand UNDER the lens - as if the M body were not strong enough to support the lens on its own. I find it very awkward to shoot with one hand under the lens and one hand on the M body. Is the weight of the 75mm Noctilux TOO heavy for the mounting flange if my M10? How concerned should I be? Advertisement Posted June 27, 2019 Posted June 27, 2019 Hi waytoosquirrelly, Take a look here Leica M10 with 75mm Noctilux f/1.25 - TOO heavy?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
halo Posted June 28, 2019 Share #2 Â Posted June 28, 2019 It is normal! It has nothing to do with the strength of the mount but is necessary for a stable held of the camera with such a heavy lens. If you would be accustomes with shooting with a tele lens you would not wonder. Support the lens under the focusing ring, put the camerabody on your right hand clench an press the camea lens combination slightly against your forehead - this will be the most stable hnadling of the camera, avoiding blurred photos as good as possible.
g2van Posted July 10, 2019 Share #3 Â Posted July 10, 2019 For such a long lens. you would naturally cradle the lens with your left hand anyway, even if it was just 400g.
adan Posted July 10, 2019 Share #4 Â Posted July 10, 2019 (edited) Let's put it this way. Since the 75 has no focusing tab for easy, one-finger focusing - how exactly were you planning to hold it while focusing? Answer - hand under the lens. (See my avatar, with 550g 135mm <<<<<<<) Just leave your hand there as you press the shutter button. Edited July 10, 2019 by adan
otto.f Posted July 10, 2019 Share #5  Posted July 10, 2019 I would recommend that with any body that the 75Nocti is attached to. Also with the SL for instance, which is quite a heavy counterweight btw, but still. It’s just normal photography above a certain length of the lens
Fedro Posted July 10, 2019 Share #6 Â Posted July 10, 2019 definitely easier to hold with your hand underneath - whether Leica recommends it or not And use the mount if you put it on a tripod Heavy lens but gorgeous rendering

That’s what this is. The combo is front-heavy and someone might sue Leica for blurry pictures due to unnecessary camera shake otherwise. It’s in the same category as the ‘Remove child before folding’ label on US strollers. Edited July 10, 2019 by Chaemono

NigelG Posted July 14, 2019 Share #13  Posted July 14, 2019 Maybe they’re just being literal - bear in mind that peanuts aren’t actually nuts (botanically/technically they are legumes).......
Jeff S Posted July 14, 2019 Share #14  Posted July 14, 2019 Lots of things we call nuts aren’t truly nuts... https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.businessinsider.com/nuts-that-arent-actually-nuts-2016-2 That’s nuts. Jeff
