m9photo Posted June 26, 2019 Share #1  Posted June 26, 2019 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) BH photo and Leica New York has deal for SL and 24-90 or 50 combol, so very tempting. I've been lurking long enough to jump to SL system. What do you guys think? also I'm considering between S1R and the new Hassy X1CD II or wait and see what SL2 might bring? Edited June 26, 2019 by m9photo
Advertisement Posted June 26, 2019 Posted June 26, 2019 Hi m9photo, Take a look here Current SL deal. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
RoySmith Posted June 26, 2019 Share #2 Â Posted June 26, 2019 The SL is a fantastic camera and that is a good price. In the end you have to decide what works for you. Is there a Camera Shop in your vicinity where you can go to see hold and operate these cameras ? Once you do that you'll know what is best for you.

I have handled S1R at my local camera store, too many buttons IMHO. i love the simplicity of Leica design, coming from an avid Q user here. The new Hassy is somewhat close to Leica design wise.
FlashGordonPhotography Posted June 26, 2019 Share #4  Posted June 26, 2019 I have all three. The SL is still a fine camera. Best user interface, buttons and menu. 1 generation behind in high ISO performance but lovely colours and the noise has a nicer look to it than many. S1R is the most versatlile. Faster than the SL in focusing the same lenses. Great ergonomics. Usual terrible DSLR menus. No mandatory LENR for long exposures. IBIS for all lenses. IQ with Lieca glass is sensational. The X1D has the highest sensor IQ. More dynamic range. A more considered camera in use. Great menus. Beautiful to look at and to hold in the hand. Only one zoom. No really long lenses yet. Hard choice. I carry the X1D when I can and the others when I need speed or versatility. Gordon

When I do have the chance of handling the new Hassy, i would probably can make decision by then, unless Leica would have that SL2 announcement then it's a waiting game again.
Tailwagger Posted June 26, 2019 Share #6  Posted June 26, 2019 I think the most direct comparison would be against the S1 + 24-90/50 which would cost about $500 (zoom)  less than the Leica SL deal.

ru2far2c Posted June 27, 2019 Share #8  Posted June 27, 2019 If your happy with 24MP and want to stay in the Leica sphere then I would go for the SL. Have not touched a SR1 so I cannot compare there. If you want more mega pixels wait on the SL2. Do have to say the X1D II is a temping deal with the price point and with an adaptor you would a lots lenses to play with. I just bought a SL in Germany on a trade deal they had there. For now I'm using it M lenses. May pick up later on some l lenses later on Leica, Sigma or Panasonic. For now I'm very content with M glass and the SL. There is also going to be something bigger and better down the road. Which means you may be waiting a while. Procrastination is a good thing sometimes.
Chuck Albertson Posted June 27, 2019 Share #9 Â Posted June 27, 2019 See if your local Leica dealer participates in that 24-hour tryout program for the SL. You get the SL and the 24-90 for a day (and a night), and that will give you a better idea if it suits the type of shooting you do than will playing with it in the store. m9photo Posted June 27, 2019 Author Share #10 Â Posted June 27, 2019 Guys, my local store has used SL/50 combo for $6900 with adapters (Canon EF and Leica M to L), I think it's a good deal?
ru2far2c Posted June 27, 2019 Share #11 Â Posted June 27, 2019 (edited) It's not a bad deal. Considering a new M -> L adaptor is $395 new and Canon adaptor from Amazon is $35 or so dollars and you save $1000. Buying new kit you gets you a two year world wide warranty. The Canon to L adaptors is Novoflex, is there any difference with Amazon?

I would check to see what if any information is passed through. If your M lenses are 6 bit coded some of the information is passed through to the SL. When in the store in Munich they had a Novaflex for M lenses and no information was passed through. Where as the M -> L Leica there is. I've just had my set up for about 10 days so I'm still on the learning curve. Am very happy with my set up of M lenses, M -> L adaptor and SL. Other lenses will follow. The closest decent camera store is the US.

It is able to communicate with lens to body. The amazon one has no commutation with lens or body.
Vieri Posted June 29, 2019 Share #15  Posted June 29, 2019 I guess the deal means that something new will arrive (or be announced) in the SL lineup soon enough That, as we know, doesn't mean that the SL will suddenly stop working So, if 24 MP and what the current SL offer is enough for you, I'd go for it - and eventually sell the camera and keep the lens when the new and updated SL comes out, if it will offer something you really want or need. Of course, if you prefer the Pana or the X1D they are available with the new X1D II around the corner, which will mean in turn possible X1D version I bodies on the market at around 2.5-3k euro, a very very good entrance price if you want to try the system. Good times overall, lot of choice and all pretty good Best regards, Vieri
scott kirkpatrick Posted June 30, 2019 Share #16  Posted June 30, 2019 Even if you do want an SL2 in order to have an ultimate system, stores that will offer it will be backlogged until 2020 sometime, so the present deals on discounted SL kits will get you started now. The 24-90 and 50 are excellent lenses, although rather large. And if the SL2 comes out with 47 MPx, as everyone believes. you may still find many uses for a perfectly good 24 MPx SL. I don't expect to get rid of mine.
