kentishrev Posted June 8, 2019 Share #1 Posted June 8, 2019 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) 7Artisans (DJ Optics) have released the 55/1.4 in L-Mount. Manual Focus, but only 200 GBP (edit: very small number on Amazon for 139 GBP). The reviews for the Fuji mount were very good, given the very low price. Supposedly very soft in the corners, but good in the centre. Some have complained about calibration at infinity. If anyone is headed that way, I'd be interested in a review and some images. Does anyone have any experience of the 7Artisans M-mount on the CL/TL with an adaptor? Edited June 8, 2019 by kentishrev add lower price

burkey Posted June 8, 2019 Share #3 Posted June 8, 2019 (edited) I tried the 7a 55/1.4 in L-Mount on my CL and had some odd results. It mounted up fine but would not work with focus magnification. I unfortunately had to send it back to B+H. I have the same lens with a Fuji mount and it is exceptional, especially considering the price. . . . I’ve just ordered one - at that price it just needs to be tried. But I’ll return it too if there are problems. How recent was yours (I only heard yesterday of the release).

Considering it is a manual focus lens I can't figure out how it might have affected the ability to zoom in digitally to focus. I'm also very curious about the release of both the Sigma full frame and the APS-C L mount lenses how they will work on the CL, if in fact they do. I don't particularly like the thought of putting such large lenses on the CL but I really would like some "affordable" auto focus choices. I've owned the Leica 35mm f1.4 TL and although it functioned very well optically on the CL it was a "beast". I subsequently ended up selling it. . . . David If it wasn’t so cheap, I wouldn’t really look at L Mount MF for the CL (I use M lenses with an adapter most of the time, so L Mount needs to be something different). I know Sigma are planning the Art series, but they are huge lenses. Edited June 8, 2019 by kentishrev
jrp Posted June 8, 2019 Share #7 Posted June 8, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) The 7Artisans lenses are 1/20th of the price of the Leica versions, which makes them almost impulse purchases. They would me discretionary purchases if they were of Voigtlander quality, but it is not clear whether they are. Similarly, even Leica has difficulty with production quality consistency. I would expect Chinese lens makers to struggle more. But at the price, the risk may be worth taking... Anyone got pointers to better data?

There is an underground of photographers who enjoy exploring the lesser quality cameras and lenses. More power to them. Some of them have thorough knowledge of the deficiencies of such and how to exploit those qualities to another viable aesthetic. They are not all clueless snappers stabbing in the dark. Apparently only the Leica adaptor or TL lenses allow the focus magnification, 3rd party adaptors don’t. The lens arrived today. Will try out over coming days, but glad to see focus peaking does work. Feels good.
lct Posted June 9, 2019 Share #10 Posted June 9, 2019 I have no experience with this lens but i would would try to trigger focus magnification with the arrows of the directional pad if i were in your shoes. 1

David Just to clarify - the magnification doesn’t work, but focus peaking does. Which is fine for me. Minimum distance shown is 35cm.

bags27 Posted June 9, 2019 Share #14 Posted June 9, 2019 Wheel magnification only works with a Leica adapter. But with a third party adapter you can generally get magnification by using the up and down arrows. Slightly less convenient, especially when holding a telephoto lens. Otherwise, no difference. 1

I didn't know the arrows operated this too. Just checked (camera next to me) - it works! I don't tend to use it often, but good to know it's there. Thank you.
