Pecole Posted June 4, 2019 Share #1  Posted June 4, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) After my thread about my visit to Ghester Sartorius, I think interesting to publish some of the photos he authorized me to take of special pieces he had. But I will start with a very special image : Ghester told me that he had something very special to show at Sorrento, and I discoreverd a street nameplate "Colli di Fontanelle". I remind my own collection was named "Fontenelle", from the name of the place where I lived in Belgium. What a hazard! Let's now come to the serious things. Photos show, in order : (1) a NAKUL negative viewer with handle; (2) a NATRA with special additive lens; (3) his three MOOLY, including one rare black one fore Leica IIIc and one with selector switch; (4) a rare chrome Leica250, serial 324072; (5) what looks like a (not serialled) Leica M5 prototype; (6) na IFLEX with rotating screen holder; (7) a Telyt 20 cm 1:4 (instead of 1:4.5) nº768113; (8) a curious Elmar 90 serialled 518830 (1939); (9) a chrome Hektor 73 (unfortunately, I didn't find the serial number); (10) and a "long" tripod adapter. I have more, but the limit…. Welcome, dear visitor! luigi bertolotti Posted June 4, 2019 Share #2  Posted June 4, 2019 The M5 prototype was olive green (it was still in Italy some years ago, after Ghester's passing) : the focusing lever of the Summicron is interesting, too… maybe added ad hoc as an experiment… but the pictures I saw of it showed a fine construction, not a rough attachment.

When pointed at 6 o'clock it also kept the camera from tipping forward when set down on its base.

luigi bertolotti Posted June 5, 2019 Share #6  Posted June 5, 2019 Thanks a lot !! According to the article "The famous photojournalist asked the Leitz Wetzlar (Germany ) factory to provide it with a special focusing lever made in stainless steel and visible in the image…" so a factory modification… though it looks very "simple" compared to the lever of the Summicron on M5. jaques Posted June 6, 2019 Share #7  Posted June 6, 2019 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) whoa!! this is only the second time I have seen the 50mm summicron 'safari' lens with the focus lever... I have that Summicron lens! It is my first ever Leica lens, and still one of my favorites. I love using the lever to focus it feels great in the hand- and yes it is well made. It reminds me of levers I have seen on cine lenses before- i think Leitz may have taken something that was 'off the shelf'... Unless it wasn't actually done by Leitz but a third party? From Memory I purchased it around 2007 online from a seller in Hong Kong- who may or may not have had a trading partner in Europe- I can't remember the details but they were specialists in finding Leica oddities.  I can't find the thread just now- but I showed this lens on the forum years ago- and I think it was you Luigi- that showed a copy of a 1970's Leica magazine that had that Safari M5 camera pictured in it- and it was fitted with my lens- same serial number. I wonder if my lens is the one pictured above as well? Was this a one off- or a run of Safari cameras with special summicrons?  Welcome, dear visitor! jaques Posted June 6, 2019 Share #8  Posted June 6, 2019 (edited) I found the thread- and it was you Luigi- and it seems the camera pictured above is the same camera you referenced back in 2010- and the lens on it is MY lens 😉    Edited June 6, 2019 by jaques
luigi bertolotti Posted June 6, 2019 Share #9  Posted June 6, 2019 AHA , JACQUES !!! You have been more persistent than me...  ; I did remember that years ago I quoted the "Summicron with lever" in some thread… but didn't embark in searching… and I didn't remember that in that old thread the Summicron that i dedpicted resulted to be in the hands of a Forum member… . A story spanning more than 25 years… probably more than 30 : my magazine was of 1992 , and surely the photo that Pecole took at Sartorius' M5 was of some years before…
jaques Posted June 6, 2019 Share #10  Posted June 6, 2019 Do you still have that old Italian magazine Luigi? I really should get those scans off you- I've been vaguely remembering every year or three since back in 2010 😉  I'd like to dig a little deeper into this mystery if I could- a few questions spring to mind:  The safari m5 pictured is described as 'what looks like a (not serialled) Leica M5 prototype'. Was there ever a safari edition M5?  Does anyone know what became of the camera pictured above from Satorius's collection? I imagine 'not-serialled' camera like that would be of some considerable value in these heady days of collecting? Was it ever sold in one of those big auction houses? I'm wondering if some collector out there has the camera... and might want the lens 😎

And no, Jacques, as far as I know there was never a Safari verion of the M5 offered by Leitz.
