Guest Posted January 22, 2022 Share #1603 Posted January 22, 2022 The most depressingly boring thread in the history of the world except those shitty M11 threads of course. Not because the images are poor ,in fact some of them are painfully beautiful but because if every shot is at f0.95 or something like that it just becomes tedious and sad. in my view. I owned a Noctilux f/0.95 and it was just a lump of glass that weighed over 700 grams, blocked the viewfinder, and, for me, has too narrow depth of field when used wide open. As someone who has been taking photos since 1957 it was anathema. There is an obsession going round that everything must be take at wide aperture. This is a very modern approach to which I don't subscribe ... a bit like drum and bass music compared to classical cello music. One side is fierce, the other is soft and gentle. The best photos taken throughout the history of photography have used varied DoF. Henri Cartier-Bresson, David Bailey, Lord Snowdon, Cecile Beaton, and those unnamed late 19C photographers who spent days setting up their equipment to take some of the finest landscape shots ever taken used varied apertures. There is nothing wrong with wide open f/0.95 shots if that's what you like. Go ahead and do it because it won't bother me. So stop shaking your head. Everyone in the world is different. Just don't expect me to be impressed with a passing phase. Bull’s-eye!

Likely one can find more open wide shots elsewhere. To me is not a thing, but I do agree that some shots including my own may not fully demonstrate the lens full abilities. It's not for everyone or every situation or subject, and to me that's part of the challenge. I do have a Meyer-optik 100mm, that only really shines wide open and under certain lighting conditions. Is not a lens I use all the time, or can indeed bring out good results often; yet really like it, just like the noctilux. It does not bother me that people don't appreciate or like seeing wide open shots with the noctilux - just surprised that in reality they end wasting their time seeing the shots and then ranting about it all, as there is so much out there to see 2
