It will be so disappointing if these don’t work with the SL 90-280.  I really thought this ‘alliance’ was based on interoperability. If not, what is the point?

Teleconverters always have limited compatibility. It's not a question of "alliance."  Nikon, Canon, Zeiss, Leica all publish lists of lenses that are compatible with their extenders (to use Leica's terminology).

The new Panasonic extenders are specifically made for their two 70-210mm zooms. I would not expect them to work with any other lenses, and that even includes Panasonic's own lenses.

If that is the case they need to be transparent about the roadmap and what will work with what and how much it will work.  It’s clear now that this alliance is not what was was initially messaged.   I think if they continue down this road of half assed interoperability it will fail miserably.

^^^ Oh Ye of little Faith … Please give the LMA partners a chance to get the new system working as intended and to document what is possible … Unreasonable to expect 100% compatibility across three manufacturers' systems … Compromises and 'no go' areas are likely.

IMO, only Leica can possibly release a good (excellent) extender for the 90-280.

And I have the feeling that they won’t.

I agree. Not because they can't, just because it's not a priority. They know how many 90-280 lenses they've sold, and I'm sure they've estimated how many owners would pay for an extender. It's probably not a big number.

Sigma and Panasonic have both promised long-lens solutions for the L-Mount. What those lack in red dots, they will probably make-up with more reasonable pricing.

The Sigma 120-300 f2.8 could be an interesting option, together with an extender. Sigma has also extenders (1401 and 2001), but I do not know if they plan to bring these to L-mount. And also the zoom is not on the list, but maybe a mount exchange is possible ?

Has anybody as yet tried to get a mount exchange ?

Sigma is a small disappointment. Their current offerings for Sony are way better than for L-mount. I hope this changes rapidly when they announce their own L-mount camera.

I don’t remember seeing as many lenses announced at the same time for any lens mount.

Whatever is on paper, currently there is only the MC-21 available which does not even support the SL. I would think that also Panasonic expected a bit more when they made their cameras available. Usually it is not producing a good momentum if after announcement there first comes a long wait. The first lenses are expected in September and then small groups in the following months. The most interesting lenses (fast zooms and teles with extenders) not even announced, yet. Whatever the size on paper (the biggest announcement ever, haha), the reality is not very impressive. Sony can easily beat that. But if you prefer to judge by paper, enjoy it.

For me it looks as if the real take off is only at the beginning of 2020. Many months in which time Sony can refresh their old offerings in all directions. And even Leica has the time to make slow progress to an announcement of a SL2. From a business perspective not the best possible strategy (for Panasonic).

Is Sigma too busy and not able to speed up production of L lenses ? Or do they want to avoid that Panasonic gets too far ahead - if the Lumix cameras should suddenly get very popular. Many expected that the Sigma lenses are important to offer affordable starter kits. But this is probably still many months away. The people currently interested will then probably no longer need starter kits (e.g. because they bought in the meantime a Sony or Canon starter kit).
