plasticman Posted July 27, 2007 Share #1 Posted July 27, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Wanted to ask people what they thought of the CL as an everyday carry around - but also with this proviso: how good is it with rather 'different' M lenses like the Noctilux? I know that this particular lens would need to be stopped-down for accurate focussing on the CL, and I also wouldn't have it on the camera all the time, but let's say I was willing to take the risk occassionally - would the CL be a good choice in combination with the M lenses I own, (which are the 21 2,8 Elmarit, Noctilux and the 90 2 Summicron)? My aim is to throw the CL into the bag all the time with the standard 40mm when I don't want to carry one of the Ms - but I also want to be able to use the other lenses when necessary. Any ideas? Advertisement Posted July 27, 2007 Posted July 27, 2007 Hi plasticman, Take a look here CL with M-lenses. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
leicapages Posted July 27, 2007 Share #2 Posted July 27, 2007 Don't know how the CL handles with M lenses, most should work without problem, but I am using it with the two C lenses and, together, they are a compact yet powerful kit. More information on my webpage under "highlights".
eckart Posted July 28, 2007 Share #3 Posted July 28, 2007 Hello, I'm using a CL since a few years with a wonderfull c-cron 40. But I also used a old cron 90 on it. With open lens it's quite lucky to get the focus but it is possible. There is also an eclipse of the focusfinder with the old summicron , so it is a handycapped focusing. The Rangefinder is not as exact as a M-Finder but with the 2/40 perfect and with the 90 perfect on f 4 and smaller. With the Noctilux I would think the eclipse is to much, so you cannot focus at all. But if you could it should be exact enough on f 2. The Lightmeter in the CL is wonderfull exact and better than that in the M6 or in the M8(which I use both ). But if you are looking for a good everyday-carry-around camera, the CL with 40 is a perfect combination and a (Leicawise) cheap possibility. Finally, buy it and use it with a C-Summicron 2/40 Greetings Eckart
plasticman Posted July 30, 2007 Author Share #4 Posted July 30, 2007 Thanks to both of you for your helpful responses! I realized as soon as I left the office on Friday that this thread should have been initiated on the Customer Forum and not the Film forum - apologies to all, as this really had no film-connection whatsoever (or about as much connection as all those interminable lens discussions on the M8 forum). The reason for my question was that, in looking for a compact, there are a few that are smaller than the CL (such as the Rollei 35, for instance), but the added advantage of being able to (occassionally) use a range of lenses on the CL would definitely sway me towards that camera. Now I'll have to see what I can find!
luigi bertolotti Posted July 30, 2007 Share #5 Posted July 30, 2007 Hi mani, the idea of CL as a "carry always" camera is one I endorse at all, if you have M lenses: I have done it for years when M4 was someway an impossible or problematic body to take on (and, yes, I have also a Rollei 35... limited to skiing), and now I consider it a "spare" for M8... after all the CL battery is less than critical... even if it dies you aren't blocked at all. The problem of focusing with "no C" lenses has been extensively discussed in the forum, and for me, that had never had a precise info about, it arrived at least to a final explanation (a very tricky question... is related not to the CL RF in itself, but to the fact that there are variations in the M series RF assembly... difficult to explain in few words... search, and you can find hereby the issue well in depth explained). CL is an excellent device, and as other have said, meter is VERY good; with other M lenses, the VF can be a problem...I haven't a Noctilux, but surely it obscures part of the VF, ditto the Cron 90... on the contrary, I have often used Elmarit 28 and Tele Elmar 135 with their ext VFs... no problem expecially if you close a little the 135, to be sure on focus. My advice is anyway to look for a body WITH its Summicron 40 : I have seen that , in the mean, the difference in price from body only/body + 40 is not so strong.. and IMHO is better to have, say, a CL body in a less than perfect cosmetics WITH the lens than a perfect body without lens... after all is a device for use. And the Summicron 40 is really an excellent lens, that works very well on M8 too, its only problem being the filter size, wich gets a little complicated to have an UVIR filter (thread on this topic exists, too.) Good search for the CL, mani ! ... personal curios... seen your profile... is there a Stockholm in Australia ?
brianv Posted August 4, 2007 Share #6 Posted August 4, 2007 If the 40/2 Summicron is not on my CL, the LTM Canon 50/1.5 is. The Canon lens is small enough to fit in the CL's pouch case. The Canon is a Sonnar formula lens and is very compact.
ihw Posted August 6, 2007 Share #7 Posted August 6, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi mani I have been using a CL for near on 30 years and my M lenses work fine. I know that there is supposed to be an issue with focusing these lens but in practical terms I have never encountered any problems. I have also used it with a 135mm fed/zorki lens for landscapes with the lens usually set at infinity and a small aperture, with excellent results. I have also used the 15mm and 25mm Voigtlander lenses and these worked really well although of course you have to use the supplementary viewfinders. The meter cell is very close to the rear element of the 15mm and yet the metering is fine in my experience. I concur with everything that has been said about the superb 40mm Cron. Using a polarizer is a bit of a pain and impossible with the rubber lenshood. A 39mm filter can be screwed GENTLY into the lens by about 1 turn - sufficient to hold it in place and not damage the lens thread. Finally the only problem I have ever had with the camera body was with the lever wind actuated meter switch that sometimes refuses to switch on. It has been repaired (non Leica) twice but is still occasionally unreliable, particulary in damp weather! A bit like its owner nowadays. All in all an excellent little camera which I actually preferred to my M3. With my current M6 it's a closer call but I still wouldn't be without it. Regards, Ian. plasticman Posted August 6, 2007 Author Share #8 Posted August 6, 2007 Thanks everyone for the answers! For a few days I was wavering - considering that maybe one of the Rollei 35 variants might be a better idea (size-wise), but a little reflection and these responses put me back on the right track. I'm gonna keep my eyes open for a bargain... ...but at the same time I'm definitely disciplining myself not to become a 'gear collector' in the vain hope that it'll somehow magically improve my photography (as can be seen over on the M8 forum!)
