stvn66 Posted May 13, 2019 Share #1 Posted May 13, 2019 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) If I use a screw in orange lens filter on my 50mm Summarit lens to counter any flare effects, would this cancel the need for a lens hood? Stacey Posted May 13, 2019 Share #3 Posted May 13, 2019 As someone else stated, no it doesn't "replace" the function of a lens hood/shade. It simply is used as a contrast filter, which does help it cut through atmospheric haze.

jaapv Posted May 13, 2019 Share #5 Posted May 13, 2019 Actually, it doesn't counter flare, it makes it worse.
a.noctilux Posted May 13, 2019 Share #6 Posted May 13, 2019 As Jaapv, in my experiences, I don't use hood mainly (my choice for years), but when I use one filter in lens front, the flare with filter on front can become "a flare too far" on pictures that I always put one hood on the lens, when I need to use a filter more often now, colored ones with Monochrom M. spydrxx Posted May 13, 2019 Share #7 Posted May 13, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hoods are generally used to reduce flare or protect a lens from inadvertant front element bumping against stuff. Filters are generally used to change contrast or color temperature, or introduce special effects (soft focus, stars, etc), or to protect the front lens element from dust and scratches.
