Greg Haag Posted April 28, 2019 Share #1  Posted April 28, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am reading the S1R manual and it discusses focus bracketing, but there is not much detail and I have not received my camera yet to figure this out on my own. Does this automatically create a series of images for focus stacking, or is this some other type of feature? Thanks in advance, Greg
Advertisement Posted April 28, 2019 Posted April 28, 2019 Hi Greg Haag, Take a look here S1R focus bracketing. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
thighslapper Posted April 28, 2019 Share #2  Posted April 28, 2019 (edited) Yes it is automatic ...... with the choice of from the focus point images outwards or either side of the focus point. The manual is extremely vague about just how big the steps are ...... and whether they always involve the nearest focal distance of the lens and infinity. In my trials using the 16-35 at 24mm I set 10 points centred on the mid distance and it did produce a set of images in focus from the near point to infinity. They stacked perfectly in PS. I think you will need to experiment to see what you need to set for your particular needs..... and then just leave it as the default so when you activate it it works the same every time. Edited April 28, 2019 by thighslapper 2

Greg Haag Posted April 30, 2019 Author Share #4  Posted April 30, 2019 My camera arrived today, I love the ease of the focus bracketing.  Here are 2 samples, the first at 24mm on the lumix 24-105 lens at f4 with no focus bracketing the second at f4 with 5 images focus bracket.  I know there are several cameras that handle this I am sure with ease, but for me this has been manually done.  I apologize for the slightly different crops, I was trying to cut out the clutter in my office. thighslapper Posted April 30, 2019 Share #6  Posted April 30, 2019 (edited) You can also set Bracketing as a function assigned to the lever on the front ...... so you can turn bracketing on and off with the flick of a switch. I have mine set for conventional exposure bracketing, but I see no reason why you couldn't do the same for focus bracketing. There are lots of customisable options on this camera that with some logical careful thought can make the most of the wide range of possible settings. Edited April 30, 2019 by thighslapper 2

grahamhoey Posted April 30, 2019 Share #8 Â Posted April 30, 2019 I have the bracketing set to one of the front buttons and the High Res mode set for the other front one. Seems to go together as both are multiple images, at least for me.

I have seen sharper sample images with focus bracketing on S1R. I am sure you will figure out which number in "steps" works for this image. I am looking forward to testing it once I receive my S1R next week.  Thanks for sharing. Edited May 1, 2019 by su25

May be a bit, possibly the shallow depth of field combined with the step settings needing to be different and this image may have needed more than 5 images.  Original focus point is xrite and it is tack sharp in the raw file.  The bigger point for me here was the ease with which this can be done.  Thanks for the feedback. Greg  Maybe it's the compression of online posting which makes it look a bit soft. Having seen the RAW files of other S1R samples, they are indeed very sharp. Did you make a profile with X-rite? I noticed S1R images were a bit warm when compared to SL. I am planning to make one if I find the same issue with my copy of the lens.

I have not yet, I normally run that in Lightroom and it appears it has not yet been update for S1R, Lightroom is not recognizing the S1R files.
