Talking about lenses, I have compared extensively both SL 50 Lux and Lumix 50 S Pro, on the SL as well as the S1. Image quality from both lenses is pretty much identical, on both cameras. I would still pick up the SL 50 Lux for build quality and handling (weight is better distributed and less front heavy compared to the Lumix). Fast autofocus is a plus point of the Lumix, almost SL Summicron fast. Beside that, and regardless of which lens was used, I still prefer the color palette of the SL.

No doubt that the S1 sensor is technically better, plus there're several other points which make image taking process relatively easier with the S1 (stabilisation, tilting screen, better EVF, and so on). However, it still requires quite a bit of post processing to reach the look I want in my images, especially if they have to match the tone of what you get from the SL sensor. I thought of getting rid the SL before heavy depreciation and get an S1 while waiting for the SL2, but I'm not so sure anymore.

Don't know what processing software you are using, but I like the Lightroom S1R combo for colour, although it normally needs a good deal of tonal fiddling, starting with exposure.  Hopefully they'll update the DCP profile.  Otherwise I'll have to roll my own.

...I suspect that the "L" alliance members will be offering stiff competition for Leica, both in body—as already witnessed with the S series—and with lenses.  I'm not clear on the significance of the Leica certification for the Panasonic S Pro lenses, but from what I've seen so far, the IQ is close to if not spot on competitive.

And used prices for Leica “L” lenses will hold up really well. Some people will simply want the best. Competition is good. To paraphrase Gordon Gekko, again ‘Competition clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Competition in all of its forms has marked the upward surge of mankind. And competition will not only save Leica, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA’. 🤣

Where the SL is concerned, it appears that heavy depreciation is already upon us.  Just looked into selling my SL and was told that the market value in the US is $3500.00 for a camera in pristine condition, with all original packaging and accessories.  But market is not what the dealers are willing to pay ... I was told to expect considerably less.

Well. The universe has spoken. I was THIS close to getting it till Selfridges sales rep told me its an ex demo camera and lens. I turned it on and the viewfinder had a lot of static in the black bars above and below the image. No static on touchscreen. I have now decided to buy a 24 90 ex demo from leica for 2800 and will pair it with the s1r. Best of both worlds. It will only cost me 200 pounds more than this deal would have.

IMO they did you a favor, the 24-90/S1R combination is fantastic. I have that combo myself and am very happy with both the versatility of the lens and the camera.

Thanks @ron777. The lens was sold out at leica store but got a mint one for 3200 with 2 years warranty. Now looking at S1 vs S1R as I have had to slightly stretch my budget. Is the bump in resolution worth the extra grand? I must say, having held an SL in hand for the first time, I was blown away by the simplicity. What a fantastic design.

First off, in re the S1 vs S1R, it depends upon the type of imaging that you intend to do.  I find that 47MP makes a big positive difference for me, as I am often required to crop, and having been accustomed to a Sony A7rIII, the file size is a non issue in terms of post.  From where I stand, the more detail you can capture the better.  So, yes, the extra 1k is money well spent, unless you are a videographer, then the dynamic shifts back to the S1.  As for the SL, I have one sitting beside me on my desk as I respond to your post.  It has a Voigtlander 50mm F/1.5 lens attached via a Leica M adapter, and the images are beautiful ... however, I have the histogram in the EVF, but now I want to visualize peaking and I have to forgo the histogram and shrift to a different screen.  What a waste of time.  Panasonic has no such limitation, and the list of its Leica lashing positive features is enormous.

So, yes, the SL is simple, but that's because Leica has predetermined what they think you need and how the camera should act.  Panasonic, and other manufacturers, have provided a plethora of options for one to pick and choose from, thereby allowing the user to pick from their lengthy list of features.  Some have complained about the S's well organized, but potentially daunting menu system, but the only way it could have been paired down would have been to eliminate the corresponding features.  That said, once the camera is set up there is little need to menu dive, as the programmable surface buttons and dials offer access to the most needed settings.

If my lengthy diatribe sounds like I am displeased by the SL, you'd be accurate in your assessment ... I am seriously thinking about selling it.

I will now end this post and put on my chainmail to protect myself from the anticipated SL lover's bombardment.

Thank you for your responses guys. I've had to pay a bit more (3300) for the 24 90 but I think for the purpose of all this (slimming kit down to one camera and lens), I think it is the best fit. And for that price, it has a two year warranty with leica so I'm happy. I'm gravitating to the s1r. Hopefully will make the decision soon. I love the SL for its aesthetic but shooting even at 1 to 2 sec handheld without shake opens a whole world of photography. For my leica fix, I'll stick to film on M3 with my trusty 50 summicron.

Wow, film.  I miss the odor of a newly opened package and loading the Leica's take-up  spool.  What I don't miss is waiting a week to see how badly I've messed up my exposures, or the unsharp images due to handshake.  And here in South Florida, locating a selection of film is like searching for Waldo.

But, I'm sure that you will be happy with the 24-90 lens, as it matches the S1R to perfection. In fact, I am so pleased with the S1R that I am selling my SL and a collection of M lenses tomorrow.  The 24-90mm resides on my S1R on a daily basis, with an occasional switch to the Panasonic S Pro 70-200mm.  However, there is a Leica 16-35mm as well as a 75mm F/2 in my future.

I only use TriX film to shoot and I don't develop it. I know it sounds counter intuitive but whenever I shoot with film, I tend to take my time with the shot, shoot it and then forget about it. I then develop a bunch of rolls months later and its like a trip down memory lane. Even the blurry ones remind me of the moment I was taking them. With digital, it's all instant.

Lens arriving on Tuesday. Interestingly, Leica SL is listed as discontinued by manufacturer on Wex Photographic's website.

How much will the SL2 be, you reckon? I've bought the 24-90 lens and was going to buy either s1 or s1r but now it seems like I should wait a month or two to see what gets released.

I am sure you already know, OIS of SL24-90 will not work with Lumix S1/S1R. You have to depend on IBIS, which should be good enough. While, OIS of Lumix S lenses when combined with  SL, will not have OIS nor IBIS. I hope I am correct 😐

Heading to jessops now to see the S1R. They've brought it in store. I have the 24-90 with me. Handled the SL yesterday. If I find the lumix too complex, I'll buy the SL. I don't do well with a lot of buttons and menus. If I like the feel of the S1r, I'll walk away with it today.

I think this part is incorrect, as some have praised the Lumix lens OIS working well on the CL.  It would be disappointing if, for instance, I’m wrong that the 70-200 can be used with OIS on the SL as a smaller option to the huge but stellar SL 90-280.

I’m open to clarification from others.

Ditto ....... all native L mount lenses should be interchangeable between bodies and OIS should function ...... although only Lumix bodies + Pana lenses will give additive stabilisation.

The situation with various adapters is more complex and complete compatibility is unlikely.
