Flash with M2 - can I get a hotshoe installed?

Hi guys,

 

as my mint M7 got fungus and Leica says they can not guarantee that they can get rid of it I need to upgrade my M2 (:

As I shoot professionally I need flash for parts of the day. 

Does anyone knows if the coldshoe of the M2 can be upgraded to a hotshoe?

Need to say that the M2 is my most liked Leica of all the ones I ever owned, what a cool tool.

There used to be an accessory hot shoe which would fit into the cold shoe and then plug into the PC socket. I'm sure you would find one on ebay or at a camera fair.

I know, but that is not what I want. I want someone to put in a modern hotshoe in this old horse.

The other solution is clumsy and not really for heavy day to day use.

I'm pretty sure a talented camera repair pro could make the adaption. Won't be cheap.

Put a call into one of the known specialists. However it may just be cheaper to buy another M that has a hot shoe than the cost of butchering your M2.

As for your M7 I wonder why Leica say they can't remove fungus? Presumably it's in the rangefinder/viewfinder assembly? Should be easy enough to clean it off, even if it has etched some of the glass it's only the viewfinder. They could even replace the whole lot if you wanted. Seems an odd response.

Leica said it this way:
The send the camera of to somewhere else where they use gas to eliminate the living fungus. However they can not guarantee that some spores will survive and regrow in certain conditions. Therefore the do not get rid of the risk.

There is also fungus in the viewfinder/rangefinder and suggest that they change it.

All this happened after the camera fell to the floor. So the fungus got discovered because of that. All pretty unpleased. Total estimated costs is 1500 something €. I have insurance for the drop and deal right now with the renowned seller, because I got the camera in November last year in mint condition. (The fungus is visible in the viewfinder says Leica though). Price was 2500 €. Together a lot of money now for a camera where I must fear to get fungus again any day...

For heavy day-to-day use,  nothing would beat a nice Metz 45 CL-4 hanging off the side of your M2 on the Metz flash bracket. 

If that’s a step too far (photos would be great though) then a Leica CTOOM flash bracket will be very sturdy and give you the benefit of off camera flash in a more compact arrangement. 

If neither of these options will suit, rather than butcher an M2, buy an M6.

Fungus spores are in the air all around you, all the time, and cover all your cameras and lenses right now, so I can see why Leica would say they can't guarantee it wouldn't reappear, especially if the camera has already been in situations where fungus growth is promoted. 

In terms of expense and practicality James's suggestion of an adapter will do as much professional work as any other solution for a small flash, and if it really is 'heavy' professional work then the suggestion by Mute-on of a Metz 45 is exactly what professionals would reach for even before buying an M6.

Sure there is fungus everywhere, still I believe it makes a difference, at least Leica says it. Once you had it in your camera, you might have a bigger risk to get these spores going active again instead of catching new ones.

I need to put my flash on and off very quickly. No time to fiddle around with cables and so on.

Nice that you know what pros need and use, but the Metz 45 is totally overkill for my style.

 I have done essentially the same thing - but my trigger is on a Leitz flash bracket (CTOOM). I also obtained an M3/M2 cord with the correct plug. Taken from an old CHICO flash that no longer has any practical application. All works very well indeed.
