pat308 Posted July 23, 2007 Share #1 Posted July 23, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Does the M8 handgrip have an Arca Swiss tripod mount designed in the shape of the base? Does the handgrip replace the bottom of the M8 or attach underneath the existing plate?
Advertisement Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 Hi pat308, Take a look here M8 Handgrip. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wparsonsgisnet Posted July 23, 2007 Share #2 Posted July 23, 2007 Pat, the handgrip is attached to a replacement bottom plate, and replaces the original bottom plate. It has a standard, centered tripod socket. If you are seeking information about the Arca quick release plate, someone here may have this device. The bottom plate on the M8 is slightly thicker, back to front, than the bottom place for a film M camera.
henryp Posted July 23, 2007 Share #3 Posted July 23, 2007 Does the M8 handgrip have an Arca Swiss tripod mount designed in the shape of the base? Does the handgrip replace the bottom of the M8 or attach underneath the existing plate? I can find two Arca-type plates for Leica listed in our sales database, as follows: Arca-Swiss Quick Release Plate with 1/4" Screw for Leica M Cameras - Mfr# 802226 and Acratech Arca-Type Quick Release Plate for Leica M - Mfr# 2148. wparsonsgisnet Posted July 23, 2007 Share #4 Posted July 23, 2007 Pat the first plate referenced above will certainly not fit the M8. It's intended for a film-type M camera. The second is also questionable. I suggest you get in touch with Arca to get into about a plate that is designed for the M8. Also, some posters here may have the plate you want and can advise you. boilerdoc Posted July 23, 2007 Share #5 Posted July 23, 2007 Kirk and Really Right Stuff make excellent QR plates for the M8. RRS, i think, even has a L bracket that allows Verticals on a tripod. I highly recommend both, especially Kirk (260-665-3670) in the States. Steve
rickp13 Posted August 7, 2007 Share #6 Posted August 7, 2007 I wrote to Really Right Stuff about an L plate for the M8 recently, and received the following answer: "I show in my book that that camera takes a MC-L I hope this helps Casey RRS". If you're interested, please have a look at the RRS website for confirmation. I've used RRS L plates with Nikon DSLRs and was very satisfied. Good luck! Jack_Flesher Posted August 7, 2007 Share #7 Posted August 7, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) The RRS "Universal" L bracket does indeed fit the standard bottom plate of the M8, and pretty much like a custom fit. I normally use the grip base, so the original base gets put to perfect use with the L-bracket permanently attatched Cheers,

I use the grip base on both my M8's and have my tripod QR plate always attached to one of the original bottom plates. I don't like having the QR plate attached to the camera when I'm not using a tripod and to put it on a base when needed and then take it off when not is just about as bad/dumb as just screwing the camera onto a older style tripod like a TiltAll. Changing the bottom plate on the M8 is quick. In fact if I'm going to use both M8's on a tripod I will leave the bottom plate with QR connected to the ballhead and just take the camera body off it and put the other on. gesper Posted August 8, 2007 Share #9 Posted August 8, 2007 I do exactly the same. I have a tiny Markins universal quick-release plate that I keep on the original M8 base for use on a tripod. When not using a tripod, I use the handgrip.
Fotomiguel Posted August 8, 2007 Share #10 Posted August 8, 2007 What a great idea! I'm going to do the same. Thank you!
gwelland Posted August 14, 2007 Share #11 Posted August 14, 2007 I have both the Kirk and RRS plates: The Kirk PZ118 fits perfectly on either the standard baseplate or the hand-grip. It's large enough to allow the camera to balance on the plate if you put it down and is a precision fit. The RRS L-plate is big and cumbersome by comparison although it is an L-plate so it does have an advantage for pure tripod only use. Not nice to use attached for handheld use though as it gets in the way.
