dwmackay Posted August 8, 2006 Share #1 Posted August 8, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello Friends, I have been watching a few DMR auctions on e-bay. There is one now for $300 USD. They do not seem to be selling at all. When I looked at completed items, there were literally no sales. Is the re-sale market too small or are the auctions just scams? Any advice appreciated. Doug M. Sounds like a scam to me, especially for $300.
stuny Posted August 8, 2006 Share #3 Posted August 8, 2006 Alternatively, perhaps that's as far as the bidding has progressed and the seller has a reserve to protect against a low-ball bid.
spylaw4 Posted August 8, 2006 Share #4 Posted August 8, 2006 Virtually 100% certain scam. If there was a reserve it would show "(reserve not met)". you need to look at where it is being marketed from, do you have to email an off-eBay address for questions etc.etc. - there are many ways to spot a scam. If it's from the same area as you (and even if it isn't) ask if you can pay cash and collect. The answer can be revealing!
pekem Posted August 8, 2006 Share #5 Posted August 8, 2006 If you examine these items presently being offered you will see that the same email address and format is used. It will be noticed that the seller is in both the US and Canada but the same email address is used: cdlafaver1@yahoo.com These auctions will be removed by eBay in due course I am sure. andybarton Posted August 8, 2006 Share #6 Posted August 8, 2006 These are definite scams. If it's the same person I think it is, the seller requires you to email him before bidding. He replies with what his actual selling price is. Which is basically retail. It's not a proper auction at all, and shouldn't be allowed. Here's an email from one of these jokers, to an enquiry I made about a 35mm f2 LHSA they were "auctioning". It was only 17 minutes to close and the top bid was about $200. I had asked him only about shipping costs to the UK. The email address was a gmail one btw and the seller was in the USA. Read on... Hi, First I want to tell you that my items are brand new, unopened box all accessories included along with all papers and receipts that needs for an international warranty. My price is the best you could get on market: $1, 850.00 including shipping, handling and insurance taxes (if you are able to make the payment in 24h). As delivery service i use UPS 2nd Day Air® service with insurance and 14 days return policy (If the item will not be as you expected to be or if you are not happy with your purchase for any reason, you will be able to return it back via the same service that was shipped without paying any shipping cost and you will receive a complete refund back in the same day) If you'll have a quick payment, i must also have a quick delivery so we can both be happy. So, if you agree, i must tell you that i never make business outside eBay.I am doing this for my self secure also for my buyer's safe. The transaction must go through eBay and we'll both be protected. To set up our transaction I need the following info: Your ebay user id: ... First Name: ... Last name: ... Address: ... City: ... State: ... Zip: ... Country: ... I will forward eBay both mine and your's info. Shortly after they verify us you'll receive important guidelines + instructions (please go through them exactly). This is all about this transaction and i will do all my best to serve you well, because my interes is to have satisfied customers who should recommend me. This guy has plenty of feedback, selling tea towels and other millinery items. I think that you can draw your own conclusions...
earleygallery Posted August 8, 2006 Share #7 Posted August 8, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) No way would I buy a DMR off e bay unless I knew who the seller was, or they were prepared to let me check/test it before handing over the money (assuming the seller was local enough to be able to do that). Much safer to buy from a dealer and have at least some form of warranty. Regards
earleygallery Posted August 9, 2006 Share #8 Posted August 9, 2006 After posting the above message I had a quick look on e bay and saw an R9/DMR with one day to go, starting at $200 with 1 day left & no bids. I stuck a bid of $200 in and found I was highest bidder with NO reserve! Obviously I expected this to be another scam/my bid would be withdrawn or something and this morning received an e mail from e bay advising that they had withdrawn the sellers account for mis-use!
