Recently started using M10.  Shot a few street shots with a card previously used. checked them on camera screen; looked fine.  laoded card into laptop; looked fine.  The next day I tried to view them on the camera screen and they were missing -- numbers seemed to be in the right places on the card, but black screen shown only.  Took the same card and placed it back in the laptop --  THE SHOTS READ PERFECTLY AGAIN IN LAPTOP.

I previously had SONY R7 and PS files on card.  I moved those all off card and again tried to read on camera.  Same Rsult; the camera doesn't recognize those files!

Any help would be appreciated.  THANK YOU!!!

NEVER use a card from another camera without formatting in the camera you are going to use it in. ALWAYS lock a card before shoving it into a card reader unless you want to format it in the computer using SDFormatter).  If you don't, you will get errors like these.

I haven't had any such SD card issues, but when I put the SD card into the (Windows) laptop I just use Lightroom to import the pictures, I don't open individual pictures on the card.

Also, I've never re-formatted a card in the camera; I just delete the image files with Windows explorer, eject the card and put it back in the camera. Worked for me since 2009 starting with my M9, and now with my M10.

Just try putting a card from a Sony NEX into a Leica M, Tom, or a Leica M card into a DMR (it will freeze totally at shot 26) or an Olympus card into a Fuji... And you are quite right, opening images from the card is not a good idea either, unless the card is locked.

That could well be - I dedicate cards to a specific camera, so don't switch models. (Except did use an old M9 card in a Fuji X100S, and it worked without problems. The Fuji just created a separate folder for its files, with the M9 files still left on it.)

The few times I've lent an SD card to someone else to read into a Mac, it has come back with odd files splattered across to the root directory. Apple devices seem very cavalier in how they treat cards, but I've never needed to lock a card in a Windows PC.

They're just pips, Paul. 😊

But still, apple pips contain HCN.

Well, actually not; apple seeds contain amygdalin, which can produce a tiny amount of HCN if chewed and the sugar portion of the amygdalin molecule is split away.  Apple seeds are quite safe unless huge quantities of them are chewed. 🙂

All  -- THANK YOU so much for the guidance, and particularly the promptness.

...Two things I need some clarification on, however:

(1)...Afraid I didn't "get" the inside humor on the "pips" and "HCN."  (You'll have to "school" me on that one!);   and

(2) JAAPV -- Are you advising NOT to open any of the images directly from a card after it is inserted into a WINDOWS computer?   ...And therefore advising to COPY the images onto the computer's hard drive -- and only THEN open them only from the hard drive copy?  ...And by "LOCK' the card do you mean cut off the plastic tab that is normally there to avoid accidentally deleting files?

THANKS

My comment about Apple devices planting random files on the SD card >>>>>>apple pips

Apple pips are said to contain Hydrogen Cyanide (HCN)

No insider jokes here!

The plastic 'lock' tab is a physical reminder to the computer to not write over it. It is up to the computer to honor that; the SD card does not control that but USE IT. :) Regarding Windows' behavior - if it works, use it and be happy.

(The Mac OS does place some files/directories on a card's root but they are harmless.)

Locking the SD card is done with the slider on the edge - it's not permanent.

I use Lightroom to copy the files from the SD card i.e. importing the files into LR, which copies them to my catalog folder (wherever that happen to be). And no, I wouldn't open a file directly from the SD card: the app you use to do that may add little extras in the same folder as the images (which could be causing your problem).

Not only  MAC system files written back, Pico, (or that pesky .DS file ;) ),  also corrupting the  files like in the original question, or stupid user errors like  confusing "save" and "save as" or mistaking an export location, both of which will overwrite the SD card files. All this is independent of the operating system. USE THE LOCK! .
