I quite like metal film reminder old older cameras, but one on M-A is a tad more modern and looks very similar to my M-D's ISO dial.

I was curious whether I can order and put M-A film door on M2 (or M3). Does any have experience or knowledge about this?

Thank you!

Nice idea, the M-A 's door is so beautiful and "modern" as can be an flat.

I've tried that out sometimes ago = it does work with M2/3/4/5/6 (this latter no meter of course or only 100 ISO ! ), with a very small "x" screwdriver to unmount from M-A.

here swap on M5 - M-A doors

but the difficulty may be sourcing for M-A's door only ...

On the face of it, there shouldn't be an issue as the body design and size are essentially the same, but there may be some slight changes in the design of the fitment - best that you put the question directly to Leica.

I'll ask Leica directly too, but wanted to know if anyone had experience as I'm not 100% sure they'll approve of "modding."  Thanks!

Oh, this is interesting! Did you try shooting too with M-A door with that M5? I'd skip that idea on cameras with the meter, but since M2 and M-A are very similar and neither have meters, I thought I'd give it a go.

If I have time I'll go to Leica store tomorrow and ask whether I can order door only and report back here again.

Thank you!

Hello Totocaster,

The back door on an M5 only has a reminder dial & a reconfiguring dial.

1 tells what type of film is being used. User set. Not automatic. The 2nd tells how to translate any reading that might have been configured in the range/viewfinder/exposure determination window into another more usable combination. This can be done using either an aperture preferred or a shutter speed preferred bias. User set. Not automatic.

The meter setting dial of the M5 is on top of the camera. It is nicely viewable showing both ASA (ISO) & DIN numbers. It is too bad that the very useful DIN numbers are not included on more recent meter dials.

The M6 is the 1st camera where there is a connection between the dial on the back door & the light meter mechanism in the camera.

Best Regards,

Michael

I recently ordered an M-A door for my Leica M4. They certainly are not cheap. They come without any leatherette, and currently no one provides one since the ISO dial is slightly offset.

It certainly fits fine (all M non metered Leica M film doors are supposedly interchangeable per my email with the well known Leica Techs), including the ones who rebuilt my M4.

I have it fitted now, but sending it off to get a proper cover tomorrow. Once it is back I can do a test roll and let you know the results

I know it’s been a hot minute- how did this work out for you? Where would you source an m-a door if you wanted another?
