jaapv Posted November 18, 2018 Share #1 Posted November 18, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) Gulu Dancers, Malawi. This is a cultural thing, the sect is very much alive with the Chewa people. They have a special status and represent spirits inhabiting human bodies. They dress up on cemeteries and attend important happenings in the community. They cannot speak, only grunt and go about demanding money. In this case they were present because of the inauguration of a new chief. The people have a respect-fear relationship to them (although I suppose their wives will recognize their feet ). FrancoisF Posted November 20, 2018 Share #4 Posted November 20, 2018 Great framing and beautiful "african" colors. I spent ten years, working in different countries (Zaïre, Mozambique, Congo Brazzaville, RSA, ...) and your pictures brought me back to those times. Regards. I'm curious, when they demand money, do people give it to them?
jaapv Posted November 22, 2018 Author Share #6 Posted November 22, 2018 Oh yes - they are welcomed and feared at the same time. Our driver was parked nearby and was so worried that he gave them five times the usual amount. It is not so long ago that they couldn't be convicted of murder as they are considered to be spirits and not human when dressed up.
