Here it is as sRGB at 671 kb . . . and still gets compressed to 256 kb . . .  but at least it looks a little better . . .

I recently changed my work flow from mac to ipad pro, but this issue started well before that.

Have you tried optimising the files before uploading? I keep banging on about this in various similar threads, but optimising is not compressing. Optimising removes a load of unnecessary data from the jpg files.

One of the following files has been optimised. The non optimised one is 450KB, the optimised one is 141KB.

I say the problem is in the editing. This is ten seconds on the compressed file:

I don't use PS... or any Adobe product. There are free and paid tools both online and standalone applications. I have been using JPEGmini for years.

I have also found that their resizing algorithms are much better than anything else I have used. So from Iridient, I export to .jpg with the compression set to the least (they call it "Quality: Best"). Then resize and optimise with JPEGmini.

Interestingly, the forum software has - somehow - reduced the size of the 450KB file to 156KB. It's quite possible that Andreas is using an optimising library behind the scenes. This would explain how both files end up at roughly the same size.

And how does one optimise a jpg using PS?

Ten seconds to accomplish what?  Sounds like you're criticizing what you assume to be my editing skills.

FTR, all I did with this photo before uploading was resize it and make sure it was sRGB.

"Editing" for aesthetics has nothing to do with a website compressing a 900kb file down to 200kb, and that is the issue here.

I appreciate Andy's efforts to find a solution.

But your deflection and misdirection are starting to get irksome.

The thing is that I don't like the compression either, but I find the effect on the image display quality for my images  minimal. I wonder why your images suffer so much. Looking for reasons, not criticising. If it so appeared, apologies, it was unintentional,

As an example: This image was compressed fro 975 bytes to 571 bytes by the forum software, yet it did not suffer any significant degradation:

BTW, weirdly, the upload window reported 953 bytes at first upload.
