Another reason is that legacy 'shift lenses' are reasonably priced (compared to e.g. current Leica offerings) and are enjoyable to use. Leica X Vario 29 March 2021 dunk It appears that everywhere, chain retail establishments have less respect for historic streetscapes then the promotion of their own corporate identities. The design of the recent storefront on the right with its large undivided glass surface, insensitive flat white fascia and inappropriate signage and letter style is an unfortunate distraction. These are beautiful photographs. Thanks for recording these historic buildings for us. Yes ... very unfortunate ... and with so many retailers trading 'online', more town centre retail premises are being left empty or occupied short-term as thrift shops / charity shops. The UK's Covid 'lock-downs' have prevented shopkeepers opening and many have ceased trading. This image would not normally be posted. Photo shows more of the corner shop's 'out of character' fascia and the shoe shop's unnecessarily ugly temporary sign .. an eyesore in such a historic town. The shop partly visible on RHS is empty and has a 'to let' sign in the window. The 'browns hairdressers' premises has been closed through the Covid lockdown but re-opens on 12 April when trading restrictions ease. Feel free to email 'northshoes.co.uk' and using my image, mention how ugly their sign looks in Stamford's historic Red Lion Square. Welcome, dear visitor! dkCambridgeshire Posted April 7, 2021 Author Share #50 Posted April 7, 2021 (edited) Stamford Library 16 October 2020 ... trying the then recently acquired Leitz PA Curtagon R 35/4 shift lens with SL 601 on a dull afternoon ... a very under-rated lens which when used at recommended f11 (when shifted) can produce good results. And contrary to popular opinions the 7mm shift is more than adequate for many architectural situations. Furthermore, it's a lightweight optic, easy to use handheld, and available at $£€reasonable prices. Likely easier to use on a mirrorless camera than on a Leica R SLR ... plan to try it on an R8/DMR soon. Welcome, dear visitor! dkCambridgeshire Posted July 23, 2021 Author Share #53 Posted July 23, 2021 (edited) My first visit to Burghley House Stamford interior ... a one year pass covering the house interior and gardens costs just £20 ... and with free car parking ... so plan to visit fairly regularly ... it's a 30 minute drive. House interior mixed lighting is not so easy to cope with photographically and no flash or tripods permitted. Long-ish exposures required so play the % hoping one of several shots does not show 'shake' ... camera does not have image stabilisation. Welcome, dear visitor! dkCambridgeshire Posted July 24, 2021 Author Share #55 Posted July 24, 2021 Correction ... dkCambridgeshire Posted July 29, 2021 Author Share #58 Posted July 29, 2021 Burghley House Stamford Lincs UK - Garden of Surprises 'Longitude Dial' (Sundial) Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! Burghley Gardens 'Longitude Dial' is surrounded by revolving busts of Roman Caesars. Leica SL 601 / Leitz PA Curtagon R 35mm f4 shift lens with Leitz Series VIII Circular Polariser; ISO 800 1/800 f11 ... handheld. The lens has a 'so-so' reputation but how many of the 'naysayers' have actually used one? How many of its critics are merely repeating others' negative comments? Fact is, thousands of published images have been taken with the lens. Schneider design and make pro quality PC lenses and if the PC 35/4 Curtagon R specification satisfied E. Leitz in 1969 and it remained in production until 1994 (25 years), it has more than a few friends. The only negative aspect I've discovered is its inability to be used with mounted 'graduated' ND filters ... it was designed for use with Series VIII filters secured with a Leitz 12514 lens hood. However, graduated filters can be handheld in front of the lens if a tripod is used. The lens is lightweight and very compact for a shift lens. A little slow and idiosyncratic in use - as are all shift optics. The lens is plenty sharp enough but when 'shifted' requires stopping down to f11 for optimum results ... maybe one stop more than more modern PC designs and no detriment when using modern digital mirrorless cameras' amplified live view. dunk
 Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members!
