Dave as you,

M-D 262 is so special that I can't explain why I don't need/want the M10-D which is just another M for me.

M-D would be the last M that I will sell (if never) 😉.

It is for me…📷

If you elect to go down this route be sure to use super-glue to affix the vulcanite; otherwise it doesn't count!

Joking aside, Mr. Prime; are you quite sure the price difference between an M-262 and an M-D Typ-262 is in the thousands of dollars? I'm not in your neighbourhood so have no idea of 'street value' where you live but, last time I looked here in the UK, the M-D didn't seem to be much of a 'sought-after' piece of kit. Perhaps this has changed?

Philip.

It sure has changed…📷

I was thinking about this further, and it turns out this can be much simpler than the method above. Since we discovered that the Leica M-D needs to access only 1.35GB of your SD card to estimate 36 exposures, we can streamline the process.

All we need is 1 command line:

sudo diskutil eraseDisk FAT32 "SD CARD" MBR /dev/disk4 && sudo diskutil partitionDisk /dev/disk4 2 MBR FAT32 "LEICA M-D" 1350M FAT32 "UnusedExtra" R

That’s it! After running the command above, your Leica M-D will estimate 36 shots, no matter the size of your SD card. The only thing you need to check is the connected SD card drive number. In my case, it’s "disk4" but it could be different for you. To find out, just run this command:

diskutil list

You can even partition just that 1.35GB by running the command from time to time to help prevent fragmentation:

sudo diskutil eraseVolume FAT32 "LEICA M-D" /dev/disk4s1

This is so wonderfully geeky.

I may be wrong,

M-D would become more expensive sh in future, as the only "less-frills-analog-like-digital-M".

M10-D added some more "frills" (I like the faux-lever wind, but not other features added).

Untill now, we don't know how many were made, Leica "don't tell" the amount of M-D made, mystery favourable to "futur Myth".

...

Anyway, I don't care as I don't want to buy/sell M-D.

Me either…📷

It's a sad day today.  I have sold my MD-262.

This corner of the forum was my first club house in this forum.   Can I still hang out here please?    :P

Shed a tear for my D please - but it's still in Sydney for the serial number records !

Update: Received my M-D and I'm thrilled with it so far.

Question for those with M-D and Leica 50/2 APO. Does it recognizes its 6-bit code?

It should since of having no screen…📷

The M-D lives only as long as the apps which are needed to set it up are being updated.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but with the M-D, there aren't any apps to help with setup, right? Everything has to be done directly in the camera, and the setup options are pretty limited...like, you can only set things like the current date.

Don’t see how an app can be used with a screen less camera.
I haven’t seen or needed any apps for the setup of the MD 262…📷

Eh? What apps? Where on Earth did you get that idea? Absolutely bizarre to put it mildly!!!

No apps have ever been needed to set up an M-D Typ-262 let alone to keep it 'alive'. It is impossible for the M-D to even access "apps" in any way, shape or form. It follows, therefore, that no app updates will ever be needed to allow them to "live".

As with every Digi-M the M-D came with Firmware installed. In all probability, during the production life of the M-D, there were firmware updates which served the entire M240 system - of which it was a member - primarily involved in refreshing the 6-bit coding list to encompass any newly released lenses (IIRC?).

AFAIK there were no firmware updates ever released to cover the M-D specifically but regardless; if an M-D is working now be assured that it will not need any "updated apps" in order to carry on working in the future; short-term or long-term. The mere idea is ridiculous.

Seriously, Deeetona, where did you get the idea that an M-D Typ-262 relied on apps for its continued use? I am genuinely curious to know where that idea originated.

The MD262 records info solely in DNG format. Full Stop. If one's post-prod software can process DNG files...

Philip.

Maybe the confusion comes from the fact that the Leica M-D’s successors allows setup through a phone app. Honestly, that’s what makes the M-D special. It was the last screen-less Leica camera to keep things simple without relying on an app for setup. For those wondering, Leica released many firmware updates fro the M-D Typ 262 and the very latest is 1.1.0.0. (Updating the firmware is done in-camera as well)
