Advertisement Posted October 1, 2018 Posted October 1, 2018 Hi bags27, Take a look here Panasonic S1R review. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted October 1, 2018 Share #2 Posted October 1, 2018 Very interesting - not for me, I find it too hugeous. But it should be a sensational camera for those that don't mind the size. Slap on a Summilux L and have a machine that can challenge anything on the market.
bags27 Posted October 1, 2018 Author Share #3 Posted October 1, 2018 which is why I think that Leica is likely to give at least some guidance on the future development of the SL before Panasonic actually ships. Otherwise, fence sitters will come off the fence...in the Panasonic direction.
jaapv Posted October 1, 2018 Share #4 Posted October 1, 2018 I strongly suspect that Leica will provide a sleeker camera. This is a bit of a beast.
helged Posted October 1, 2018 Share #5 Posted October 1, 2018 (edited) Looks like a win-win situation for me: Different bodies, different sensors, different strategies, vastly increased number of lenses. Different price levels. All in one mount. Just imagine putting the SL primes on these bodies. And with Sigma, to use native-ish long lenses on the SLx. Finally. bags27 Posted October 1, 2018 Author Share #6 Posted October 1, 2018 (edited) Really wish I could get enthusiastic about the Sigma long lenses. That would solve a lot of problems for me. But really, honestly, they just don't seem nearly as good as the Nikon 200-500 f/5.6 or the super compact 300 f/4 and 500 f/5.6 (and, of course the Canon 100-400), which can be used with an adapter. And the Nikons and Canon are just a bit, but noticeably, less good than the 280mm f/2.8 APO-Telyt-R that, for example, tritentrue wields so brilliantly on the CL thread. I mean, after all, it's Leica glass, and no amount of hoping and praying is going to turn anyone else's glass into Leica glass. But with lowered expectations, sure. But maybe even more for wide angle, though my eye is going to compare all of that negatively to the absolutely astonishing 16-35 zoom.... otto.f Posted October 1, 2018 Share #7 Posted October 1, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) It looks like a Nikon F or F2. A mirrorless camera with a sort of prismahouse on top?

On the wide side, the 16-35 SL exists and it is f a b u l o u s . As long lens, I mostly use the Nikkor 400 f2.8E with extenders. This is a fine system on a Nikon body. On the SL you get 3 fps with the electronic Novoflex adapter, slowish/unaccurate AF and no stabilisation. With a manual adapter, you get max fps, but fixed aperture. Neither option is optimal. I strongly believe Sigma can put together high-quality, long lenses - possibly not in the upper, top CanNik-land, but close. I prefer a long prime (400mm f2.8 or 500mm f4 or 600mm f4 or something similar) and extenders. Others prefer long zooms. And I am willing to play for a long lens; the long Canon/Nikon/Sony lenses are already quite expensive. I would then seriously consider to sell off D5 and D850 and most of the Nikkor lenses. Time - and Sigma - will tell... Edited October 1, 2018 by helged

Their M43 Vario-Elmarit is a very good lens, for instance. There is no reason that they cannot use their expertise, acquired from Leica, on similar FF lenses.

Jaap, the SL is huge and heavy for a mirrorless FF camera too. But agree, this is like a king size G9 (and the G9 is big already).
jaapv Posted October 1, 2018 Share #11 Posted October 1, 2018 Yes, but Dr. Kaufmann did suggest that the SL2 would be different in this respect.

The SL-huge and heavy? I strongly disagree (using two of them). Size and weight are just perfect, esp. with SL-Varios and SL-Primes as well...

The size is also perfect for the larger M-lenses like 50-Noct, 28-Lux, 75-Lux/Noct, 90-Cron, etc. For the smaller M-lenses, the M-body is a better match.
