Whatever spec the SL2 will offer would have been fixed in design and manufacturing readiness with supplier components committed six moths before product launch. Now would be the time when prototype gets beta testing and firmware tweaking. Save all your EVF hopes to SL3.

I would be surprised if SL2 can offer hardware specs exceeding S1R as both launches within 12 moths. There will be many shared components and design between S1R & SL2 since Leica has been coorperating with Panasonic for years on multiple earlier models of cameras with AF.

The possible differentiation between SL2 and S1R would possibly be subtle Color rendering on images captured. Better adaptation of M & S lenses. Most likely the user interface in menu and buttons will greatly differ.

Just my thoughts.

Moe likely at least 12 months … and beta testing would commence at least 6 months prior to launch.

It is just a matter of habits if the SL or the S1R seems complicated.
As a longtime Panasonic GH2 -GH5 and G9 user i found the SL menus very unintuitive and complicated as i borrowed me a SL for a weekend.
At the end of the Weekend i saw much clearer. The same will be with the menue from the S1 or S1R for a new user. They have much more features than the SL so there has to be a menue that is much bigger. But for normal work you do not have to dive so deep in menus and the quick menue will be sufficient...

You have a valid point on user learning. However, Japanese electrical / electronic product maker often throw multiple options to users. My TV remote would be a good example. I’ve come to love the user interface of my SL over time. That is a pain to give up if I were to move over to S1R.

I hate the buttons all over the camera body on most DSLR & Mirrorless cameras.

Thats the price we have to pay if we want to shoot with more affordable cameras…

How exactly do more buttons equal less costly?

There are some, myself included, who find the presence of dedicated buttons to be facilitators of quick access to various functions.  That's not to say that the Leica SL's simplistic approach is not an elegant design, it's just not appreciated by everyone.  That said, if you subtract the buttons from the equation and view both from the front, they are very similar in appearance ... almost as if Panasonic copied the SL's profile.

BTW, my M lenses attached to my SL would not win any beauty contests either but, then again, it's not about looks, it's about function.

This blog post answers the question of M lenses on the S1R.  The Panasonic reps are saying the microlenses are optimized for M.  So many new features to test on this new body, M lens being paramount for me.

I'm afraid looking at a few shots on the LCD does not adequately test M lens performance .... and he was testing the summiluxes that are known to work better than most anyway.....

I thought the microlenses were configured specifically for increased light gathering ..... not to compensate for the very oblique light angles in M series lenses. Elsewhere Leica stated that the S1 & S1R release were a 'surprise' for them .... which is a bit odd considering the Panasonic reps here state Leica collaborated on the sensor microlenses.

If the Panasonic reps that 'Reader Roy' spoke to are anything of the calibre that I spoke to at the SiR/S1 launch at the NEC Photo Show here in the UK then they were about as knowledgeable and reliable as the average used car salesman.

I'd be interested to see what someone else comes up with when testing a range of M lenses in a rigorous manner. I'm led to believe the issue is more down to the thickness of the cover glass on the sensor. Lloyd know all this and bangs on about it a lot so I'm surprised he let this pass without comment ....

A few observations after a day with the S1R.  For the second time, the first was with the Z7 I am not finding 40+ MP to be the advantage over Leica 24MP SL and M240 that I had thought it would be.  IBIS is amazing, although not necessary for what I do and has many limitations.  I would like to use it for the creative potential but technically I can live without it.

The Panasonic 24-105 is a good lens, bordering on great if it didn't have to compete against the Leica 24-90, my copy does sharpen up nicely at f16 where diffraction is supposedly making it less sharp, decentering is likely playing a roll.  Panasonic easily has bested Nikon with their kit lens for the Z7, a lens that never quite sharpened on the edges.

The buttons/menus are overwhelming.  I knew this going in but would persevere if the IQ was significantly better than my SL and M240.

The Leica S to SL adapter doesn't allow AF nor aperture settings, the camera doesn't preclude use and the usual work around of manual focus does work, I didn't test the aperture work around of stop-down removal from an S body.

Greens from the Panasonic lens lean more to the blue whereas the Leica lens leans to the more yellow greeens.  My appreciation of Leica lenses increases when comparing other brand lenses, not that I didn't greatly appreciate them prior but I am aware of the accolades made about other brands and yet how lucky we are to have been enjoying these wonderful lenses for many years and they continue to be head and shoulders above the rest....and hence the often mentioned "never sell a Leica lens" here on the forums.

There are many things to like about the Panasonic, the IS marker in the viewfinder provides significant feedback and never before training on steady holding, the viewfinder magnification is well done.

So, it will likely go back, I'm hoping to try some astrophotography tonight, it has a buried feature called Starlight AF.  If the camera detects stars in the night sky after determining low illumination AF, then Starlight AF will be activated.   Page 100.

Are you returning it because you find it too complicated or have you misgivings in re IQ?

I've only had a few hours with the S1R and a Leica 24-90mm Vario-Elmar (S1R arrived this AM), and I'm already finding it more appealing than my SL in terms of ergonomics, EVF and of course, IBIS and likely there will be more.  IQ is great, but unless you really pixel peep or crop in, for example, Capture One,  you may not observe the benefit of 47MP.

IQ and menus.

Interesting. With the same 24-90, aside from slight a variation in color rendition, I don't see a difference in IQ when viewing .jpg files at normal magnification.  However,I have not had the time to convert to DNG for RAW comparison.  As for the menus, and as an a7rIII owner/user in addition to the SL, I am accustomed to more complexity.  But in the case of the S1R, the elaborate lists are dictated by the bounty of available functions.  I've found, with the Sony, that once you set the buttons and dials to your liking, menu diving is a rare occurrence.

Lightroom/Camera Raw now supports the native RAWs from S1 / S1R…

Thank you, but I'd abandoned Adobe when they adopted their subscription program.  I've found, for my purposes, that Capture One is superior to what I recall of LR.
