Finally snapped these last Saturday in the relentless Southern sunlight, 98 F and humid, outside a warehouse in Ashland near Richmond, Virginia. Where's a cloud when you need one? ;) MP .58, 35/2 LHSA, Portra 160 NC, (the latest version)

Hi William - I agree, the Portra seems to have handled the hard sunlight well. The color is really vibrant without being oversaturated looking. Very lifelike feel to the shot.

I love the old iron. I can remember riding around in an old Ford pickup from about the same era as that Chevrolet in your picture. It brings back memories of that hot wind and Texas dust blowing in the open windows, the buckboard type ride, and the cabs were so narrow...

Hello Paul,

There would appear to be an avid following for cars like these in Richmond and the emphasis is on restoring to sound condition and excellent running condition rather than "show". This time of year they drive them somewhere almost every weekend, maybe to an informal gathering at a diner. They are not just for parades. :) All the owners help each other with these projects, regardless of the condition or rarity. Must be a "Southern" thing...

I did meet the owner of the '47 pick-up at the shop and he owns several other 30's & 40's cars. The La Salle is a 1940 and is my son's "driver". While the interior was refreshed some 20 years ago, it is in very good original condition and the car has only 59,000 miles. My son rebuilt the engine at this warehouse shop and it runs sweetly, (same engine a a Sherman Tank, BTW), but there is a slight imbalance in the clutch and the transmission will come out again. He also fitted new brake shoes recently and these must be a tiny fraction too large for a '40 and there is a rubbing sound. While I was there, he ordered a proper set of shoes from a specialist in California who will make up a set in a couple of weeks. Then it will be mechanically sorted after working on it and replacing components over the past year or so. While the body is rust-free and solid, it does have a little Bondo, but I think he will leave a repaint till he hits the lottery. It's not awful since a repaint 20 years ago.

Sam,

Yes! See below.

Mike,

I know all about your weather. I have friends in Yorkshire and moderate the Morgan Sports Car Club listserv in the U.K. Since I normally bring sunshine when I attend Club events over there, I've suggested in the past that they pay my air fare. Maybe they will pay it next summer if you don't get relief soon! With the USD the way it is, might be the only way I can afford to come over next June for the big gathering in Cornwall... :(

Brent,

Here's a rather straight shot of this pair which I liked less but may show the proportions of the La Salle better. (Every time I see this car, I think of George Patton. :)) I will have to see this weekend if I have anything better but the light was very contrasty and shooting angles very limited unless you want to see a lot of scrap and warehouses in the background. Wouldn't you know, two days before I was carrying my whole kit and could have shot some details of these cars with the 50 and 75..., but everything was inside and the doors were blocked with dismantled cars in various states of repair. That Saturday I had only my snapshot kit!

If you want beautiful, son, Chip, has a friend down there who is an avid collector who shows to a high standard. Got a quick look at his collection on the 4th before some guests arrived and we dropped by briefly on Sunday to see a super-rare Nash being unloaded from one of his enclosed trailers so that he could rescue a fellow collector who was stuck on the road nearby. I must get a ride in this thing somehow the next time I'm down there. What a beauty !!! Hemmings Motor News: The Count of Kenosha

Hello Andy,

They don't make much sense up here, but on those smooth, (no frost heaves), curvy Virginia lanes through the countryside...

Paul,

Ron has a shot of a similar pick-up full of kids at a polo match near Hamburg from a couple of weeks ago. Perhaps if he sees this thread, I can twist his arm to post it here. Glad you enjoyed the memory...

OK, Mr Lamb asked me to post this here. The LADY (!) who drove this, owns a nice collection of classic cars and drives rallyes like Mille Miglia, Carrera Panamericana etc., some cars are real dinosaurs (for example one of only two 1921 Hispano Suizas). She´s her own mechanic btw.

Thanks! Love that little blond girl on the left side of the truck. Looks good at this size. Some people get invited to the nicest places. :)

Can just imagine what the lawyers over here would do if they saw kids having this much fun. :(

Like the solo shot of the LaSalle...the Portra really did a nice job here. I haven't tried the newest version yet...but I think I should seek it out. I've really become a fan of the slightly "older" Portra for doing the detail stuff I like to shoot. Good choice on the film...I know how much fun that type of lighting is....

  • 3 weeks later...

Hi William,

I like shot (your money shot angle on cars works again). That sun looks like what we have here in AZ, but the NC did a pretty good job.

You are going to make me go out and start visiting some of the car shows again.

Best,

Ray
