Those last four photos that I've posted #1934,35,36 and 37 make me realise how much I love this lens.

If you compare the first photo at f1.4 (with the soft bokeh that I've never seen before) to the last one at f8, which is razor sharp, it illustrates how broad the capabilities of this amazing little lens are.

Yeah, I get that; much like the 75 Summilux.

Much as I like many of the images posted throughout this thread, I’m still struggling to really see where this lens excels (other than really nasty veiling flare).  When mine comes back from Wetzlar, I intend to use it almost exclusively with my M-A (along with the 28 Summaron - it should be a useful pair).  When I think about the 35mm lenses I’ve used, the Distagon was sharp as a razor, with Zeiss colours and contrast; I’ve never liked the 35 Summilux ASPH FLE with its harsh and busy bokeh; but I do love the APO Summicron.

Your image above at #1934 is lovely, but there is a fair amount of CA in the highlights (but way nicer than anything the FLE could achieve, I agree).

I have always hoped for a do anything lens, good for all occasions (which is why, in the past, I have never thought about getting different lenses in the same focal length - buying my first Leica in 2010 changed all that).  I think I need to spend a bit more time really using my lenses more carefully, and looking beyond just “vintage look”.

I’m hoping comparative use of the Summilux pre-asph and the APO Summicron will give me something to work on.  My first task will be to get the framing right for the 35mm field of view (without wishing the image had been taken with a 28mm lens)!

Cheers
John

Hi John

For me, the attraction in this lens is that it's genuinely a 2-in-1 lens. At f1.4, 2 and partially at 2.8, it offers a delicacy and almost painterly quality that's absent from contemporary Summarons, Summicrons and Zeiss lenses.

At f4, 5.6 and 8, it provides all the sharpness that I need, as well as lovely rendering on a digital sensor. It's almost like an adjustable wrench - I can choose a setting to provide what I need.

What's happening with your 'Lux at Wetzlar?

Thanks Ernst, I need to spend more time with it.

I was sending my dead M10-D to Wetzlar for a heart transplant, and sent the 35 SSummilux in as well for a CLA.  There was nothing wrong with it, except I got less “glow” and more veiling flare.  It’s in good condition otherwise, and needs further use on the camera!  Hopefully, it will match the 75 Summilux for its 2-in-1 character.

With the M system, I’m pretty cemented in the 21-28-35-50-75 range.  I think the system shines in the wider end of focal lengths.  It’s nice, with those lenses, to have a couple of older Mandler and earlier lenses - the 28 Summaron (albeit the re-issue); the 35 Summilux pre-asph; the 50 Summitar LTM (from 1948, with its weird bokeh); and the 75 Summilux.

Just need to get out and take pictures more, now that the stitches are out of my foot!

Cheers
John

Completely agree John, regarding wider lenses. I don't do portraits, so anything longer than 35mm is superfluous, since I have a deep and irrational hatred of the 50mm focal length! It's too wide to be long, and it's too long to be wide. How people can choose to work with a 135mm on a rangefinder is beyond me!

I only use 2 lenses: my Elmarit-M 2.8/21 and my Lux 35 v2, both Mandler designs. I use the 21mm around 80% of the time. For me, it's such a natural focal length on a rangefinder. I use the Lux more selectively, not because I need the focal length but because I want the way that it renders.
