Ken Abrahams Posted July 12, 2023 Share #184 Posted July 12, 2023 I usually use the SL2 with the 90-280 for that extra sharp combination however the SL2S is no slouch for sharp. Popular Post michali Posted July 29, 2023 Popular Post Share #189 Posted July 29, 2023 An older, large ♂ Leopard @ Maswa Game Reserve, Serengeti Tanzania, early evening. This guy was big, one of the largest Leopards I've come across, probably around 10 -12 years old. He was eyeing some Wildebeest, one of which he hunted later that evening. And it explains - together with the outstanding sharpness of the SL90-280 - the very gentle & pleasant focus fall-off.
Luke_Miller Posted August 2, 2023 Share #193 Posted August 2, 2023 I received my new-to-me 90-280 lens today and began evaluating it with the SL2. Most of my test images were sharp but several seemed like focus was off a bit. After recalling discussions in this forum about issues at slower shutter speeds when using the mechanical shutter, I shifted to the electronic shutter using the same settings. The resulting images were all impressively sharp and my "focus issues" disappeared. I don't know if I was experiencing "shutter shock" or some other phenomenon, but with the mechanical shutter, lens @ 280mm and my usual event shutter speed (1/125) I was seeing softness in some images that was not present when using the electronic shutter. I love this lens. With my Nikon bodies the 70-200 f2.8 is my most used lens during event shoots. Now I will be shooting events with my SL2 😃

The unsharp images are definitely from shutter shock/slap, electronic shutter sorts it out. Just keep in mind that using the ES under artificial lighting can cause other issues, e.g. rolling shutter effect.

I learned about banding with the electronic shutter when I shot my first wedding with my SL. My normal shutter speed for events (1/125) was banding free, but during the course of the service I inadvertently changed shutter speed to one that caused severe banding. Fortunately, most of my subjects don't move fast enough for rolling shutter to be an issue.

Perhaps Leica and others should find a way to detect flicker, and teach their auto modes to use safe speeds. Personally, I never used electronic shutter with the SL at weddings. It is quiet enough that the mechanical shutter is fine.

I repeated this test with my SL (Typ 601) and got the same results. For slower shutter speeds (1/125 sec in my case) use of the electronic shutter is necessary for consistently sharp images. (And they are very sharp. Wow!) The lack of IBIS in the SL seemed to make no difference, so I assume IBIS is not a factor when shooting the 90-280 on the SL2.
